Of course you’ll get better performance from the 16GB, but it’s a pricey upgrade.
What are you using the system for and how much does that throw off your budget? I’m of the buy once, cry once philosophy for computer upgrades.
ETA: Just saw this and people below with real hands on experience are saying 8 GB runs well on the M1 chip.

If someone doesn't use 8gb of ram then there is zero difference bumping up to 16, so it's not guaranteed you will see better performance.

Anyone running the M1 w/ one of these configurations or done some real in-depth research?
I have the baseline M1 and its fine. Everything I've seen says the 16GB upgrade is not worth it. You can't compare 8GB of "normal" ram with the integrated chipset that apple has.
I'm sure I'm using similar applications as you. I had a lenovo with 30GB of Ram and my M1 runs just as well

I would just get the 8GB, honestly. Even large Excel files will do fine on that, especially with the M1 chip.

True. I don’t have any hands on experience with the M1 chip but people who do seem to believe the 8GB will be sufficient. I’m running 16 on my 2015 MBP, but that’s comparing apples to horses.

That's what I was looking for. 8 GB it is. Thanks all!

I'm using the M1 MacBook Air with 8GB RAM and it works fantastic for me (I downgraded from a previous 16GB MacBook Pro).
My only concern with this is SSD life from thrashing the page file... but for a sub-$1000 laptop I'll be fine
