re: Wife wants a Peloton, but open to knockoffs if they're solid. Any suggestions?

There are a literal ton of used ones for sale on Facebook. Several versions too which actually worries me because why is Peloton making different versions every couple years. People are apparently replacing theirs with newer versions. That fact has persuaded me to stop shopping.
I’ll second the road bike. No replacement for the exploration of getting outside and getting it done. I don’t think you’ll find a 16lb road bike for Peloton $ though. Maybe Peleton plus a year or 2 of subscription.
Edit-also note Peloton is shipping bikes something like 4-6 weeks from purchase. It’s usually faster to find a used one and get it then a new one.

Believe it or not, what I have in my road bike is about what a new peloton costs. But I built it myself from the frame up. I got a really good deal on a good chunk of the components.

I just looked and there weren't any around Birmingham. A few in Atlanta and Huntsville.

Some people live in places where it's cold and snowy/icy for a good portion of the year. I'll stick to indoor cycling and just run when it warms up.

This is the big thing people are missing out on. Sure if she wants to be a cyclist get her an equivalent priced road bike with trainer. But for one, she's not going to like riding a road bike because it isn't showing the metrics and competition that the Peloton does, or you're going to pay a *gasp* monthly subscription for Zwift.
And if you think you're going to save some cash by getting her some clunker of a bike and throwing it on a Walmart trainer it's only going to turn her off faster and have you shelling out for the Peloton anyway.
