They didn’t lose nearly 100% of output like wind. Their reduction in capacity was much less severe.
If you lose 100% of 7% and 50% of 80% whats your bigger problem?

But you know how the media will react when one of these plants eventually gets a direct hit from a powerful tornado or quake and there's "concern" that the storage cylinders they use could leak. There would be a huge push to shut down those facilities.
Those canisters are made from thick steel with a poured concrete shell inside. You could run a tank into them and the tank would crush like a Smart Car. And even then they are placed behind multiple security barriers.
I mean, we can buy volcano insurance while we’re at it. That’s just silly.

And what is solid and consistent throughout this chart, Nuclear. This is the only solution.
How about you look at the chronic delays and cost overruns of Southern Company's attempt to build a new reactor using Westinghouse that has well over $1B in cost overruns and still not finished and South Carolina pulled the plug on theirs over 2 years ago due to similar outcomes. Westinghouse is pathetic and hadn't built a reactor in 30+ years. There is no nuclear option, plus dealing with waste risks.

Dude, the Texas grid shite the bed, period. Compare how well the SPP did using the exact same sources of energy and you'll see our providers simply went on the preparedness cheap and the temps killed production. Doesn't matter how you slice it or try to stick it to muh Libs. This is all a stupid argument.

A lot of energy companies are going to upgrade after this.
All energy distributors will upgrade because they won’t have a choice.

Almost all the delays caused by regulatory red tape. There is a nuclear option but the bed-wetting retards don't want it.

I don’t think anyone is trying to do this.
I’m just pointing out that it’s ridiculous to not place any blame on the renewable sources of energy in Texas. It’s a ridiculous position to have. Wind energy output fell to nearly 0 right as demand spiked.

I would bet that Nat gas producers, the E&P cos, will not spend the $ unless forced at gun point. It’s hard enough to make $ in the shale game and the name of the game since 2014 is cost cutting. Spending money for a one off doesn’t make sense and Tx gov doesn’t have the same control over the producers as it does over the generators.

The solar producing fields are out in west texas not Austin.

I mean, isn't that a good thing? We're not talking about environmental here. We're talking be ready next time so 5M people aren't freezing for 3 days. Who cares where the energy source comes from. Just keep the dang lights on.

It doesn't matter what power source we use if the operators are too damn cheap to winterize their equipment.
I don't know why some people feel the need to make this about wind power when the reason we are getting fricked has nothing to do with the power source.
Oh wait yes I do. Politicians are trying to confuse everyone into getting mad at the wrong thing so their donors don't have to actually spend the money to fix their shite for when this inevitably happens again.

They make more sense out there.
IMO this is a source of energy that's best if scaled down to supplement home or business energy use in most places.

They run wind turbines in Norway in the winter, you don't think with proper maintenance and installation they couldn't do it here? It was a combo of lack of infrastructure investments coupled with the age old question of how much risk do you try to mitigate.
Their turbines are designed for the climate. As are all turbines, they are all optimized for the region they are installed in. Do you really think there's just one universal design that works everywhere, onshore and offshore?

It was a once in a 20 year winter storm.
Try closer to 120 years. You obviously don't do math so it's now obvious why you don't grasp the engineering in play here.

I agree that residential solar is its best use. But a lot of west Texas is completely useless land and gets a lot of good irradiance. Might as well use it for something.

State and Federal dollars incoming.
ETA They will get bailed out.

Fair point and for most the answer to actually making money is a resounding “NO!”

If they are down now, they are missing out on a massive amount of revenue due to the spike in energy prices.
I bet they make chances before next winter.
