The real problem with nuclear as I understand it is what to do with the waste?
Also it sounds like the nuclear plants failed too.

And people act like this is some huge issue. Making plastics involves a lot of really horrible stuff but you never hear a tree hugger suggest we need to quit making the stuff.

You haven’t been paying attention.

Do you really think O&G companies are going to spend $ weatherizing production for such a rare event? The whole name of the game for shale now is cost control, so an afe for 20 deg weatherizing would be doa.
there was a plan in place to donthis after the 2011 and 2013 freezes but was scrapped because it was too expensive for a "rare" weather event.

That’s a bunch of crap that only someone that is ignorant will believe. So you mean to tell me in cold weather states including Alaska , Montana wind does not work . They did not winterize the wind mills in the southern states . They have blood on their hands just like Republicans shifting the blame .

Also, Texas infrastructure isn’t designed for once-in-a-century freezes.
This is not true HOWEVER, Oncor does rely on a work force made up of 80% contract labor. Some of which can not speak or understand english who are not trained, understand eletrical theory or held responsible for the end results.
Oncor tells it's empolyees "cheaper to use contract labor". They dont have to pay benifits etc....
Oncor customers are paying for it now.

Dead eye and his buddies won't do shite to G.W. Bush. Deregulation of Texas's energy sector is Bush's baby and caused this shite.
COAL and LIGNITE is the answer. Plants can be built with very clean scrubbers and supply enormous amounts of energy.

This has to be a setback for the Texit movement. "It's fine guys we can handle everything by ourselves" *Lights go out*

cheap power
Ok so is that in long run worth the current issues? Unless the high NG gauging gets fully passed on to customers. I'm hearing it can be up to $300/day.
So wondering...did deregulation help innovation and investment into other forms? Ie..would windmills/solar been a viable option if we didn't deregulate? Serious question...I'm seriously trying to reevaluate/formulate an opinion on the subject. Obviously to late to judge a past decision today, but nothing wrong with learning to help future decisions/opinions.
Obviously CA shows us how full Regulation isn't the answer, so where is the happy median?..who knows but would be good to know. Even if just a thought exercise.

Regarding thought exercises; has there been any discussion of hooking up the Texas grid to either the eastern or western grid so that electricity can be imported to Texas in times of severe need? Could it provide redundancy without paying for a lot of new capacity that sits idle most of the time? I know nothing on the topic, just wondering.

I don’t recall anything remotely similar resulting from those freezes.

It's connected to the south "viva la mexico"
Who in the west or east would want to be connected to Texas's grid if it's a liability?

Simply put it is only independent politically to keep the Bubba's believing they are special but in reality is interconnected to the main grid and always has been, problem is there is no spare capacity in the grid right now.

I don't know, but would be a good positives/negatives convo to have.
TX having it's own grid goes back to the 30s irrc. Ercot was created in 60s/70s maybe? So this isn't new or something quick to change. People are just now hearing about. Most Texans have known this since birth as it's connected to the "if we have to secede we have our own grid, so that's a major plus". So yes it's connected to the age old Texan want to have that out. So yes it's been atop convos at the moment with the TEXIT.
Now sharing excess to get help in case needed is something I'm sure will come with strings that many aren't willing to consider. I don't think it is, and think many bitching are transplants that are looking for things to complain about. Texans haven't seen this in their lifetimes, so may see it more as a hiccup. BUT definitely want it looked into to prevent it from happening again. Texans just want/need to know if their power outage is due to damage (which isn't abnormal) or a calculated blackout. Which the latter is fine, but if you are one that are out 10+hrs, and 2 or so hrs on while the neighboring streets haven't been at all, is a concern.
My concern is the power price gauging due to the run on NG. That I don't see should be passed on to customers. Ie you get power for 2hrs a day, and it costs you triple+ than a normal day would have. Ercot and Austin need to make sure they mitigate this somehow before the next bills start hitting mailboxes or it's going to get worse PR wise when pics if bills start hitting social media.

No, it isn’t. It’s a spur. We can do a lot better job managing this shite ourselves without the rest of you dead weight motherfrickers getting in our way. Same with the border.
