Iowa says hello!!! i think they get 42 percent from wind...i think it is cold there...

In 2019 Iowa produced 43% of their electricity, not total energy from wind, and since it is really cold there guess what , most homes, and businesses are heated with propane, natural gas, and fuel oil. The devil is always in the details.

But then the stupid people also think that it immediately paints a huge target on their back for a foreign attack, and that a nuclear plant somehow contains the explosive power of a nuclear bomb

I retired from the nuclear industry. The concrete containment building (which is where the reactor is located) is designed to withstand a direct hit. A 747 fully loaded with fuel would only make a black mark on the concrete wall if it were to hit it. But like you said it’s the ill informed people that causes problems for the nuclear industry. A nuclear plant today is safer than any other type of facility.

Sandia Labs built a section of containment wall, then put a old F4 Phantom on a rocket sled, and ran it into the wall at 500mph, the Phantom basically vaporized, leaving just a lightly scratched up area on the containment wall.
