This. Seeing it in a packed theater back in 1998. The first 24 minutes - you felt exhausted and horrified when that scene finally ended.

My Uncle (who was an Army Ranger in WW2) told me the only thing missing from the opening of Private Ryan was the smell. Other than that, he said those first 20 mins were exactly right

I remember a couple of old timer veterans leaving the theater in tears after that movie. It was quite a sight. That opening scene just sets the tone.
