If you have 3+ viable parties, you have to be able to form coalitions in order to govern. Let's say, just for the sake of argument, there was something close to an equal split of electoral votes, state delegations to the House of Representatives, and the Senate. Something along the lines of 30-25-25-20. No one would have a majority. I've lived in a country (Bolivia) years ago where the #2 vote getter in the presidential election threw his support behind the #3 vote getter when it went to the congress. #3 became president, #2 got to name almost all of the cabinet members, and #1 was shite out of luck.
Aggrieved people on all sides who talk about starting a third party tend to forget that if you have any success at all, you still have to be able to form a coalition with at least one of the other two, or else they'll gang up against you.
