Trust in traditional media has declined to an all-time low, and many news professionals are determined to do something about it.

Why it matters: Faith in society's central institutions, especially in government and the media, is the glue that holds society together. That glue was visibly dissolving a decade ago, and has now, for many millions of Americans, disappeared entirely.

By the numbers: For the first time ever, fewer than half of all Americans have trust in traditional media, according to data from Edelman's annual trust barometer shared exclusively with Axios. Trust in social media has hit an all-time low of 27%.

56% of Americans agree with the statement that "Journalists and reporters are purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false or gross exaggerations."

58% think that "most news organizations are more concerned with supporting an ideology or political position than with informing the public."

When Edelman re-polled Americans after the election, the figures had deteriorated even further, with 57% of Democrats trusting the media and only 18% of Republicans.

I’d be curious to hear an argument against these statements. I can’t think of a single hard news outlet.

The Ministry of Truth would never steer me wrong.

This is fake news and should be banned.

What do you idiots expect when Fox News claimed the election was stolen over 800 times before the Capitol Riot occurred?

Fake news. It's more like 86 and 88% respectively.

I'm shocked the numbers aren't worse. I don't even trust these numbers. If you have faith in the media than you deserve everything bad that comes to you.

Not surprising given the medial illiteracy in this country.

To be fair, we have a lot of editorials, and not a lot of news.

Those 44% and 42% must be really stupid to think the Media is telling the truth.

Ok but how would that impact people’s views on the media as a whole? The media as whole (CNN, Fox, MSNBC, NYT, etc.) have lost people’s trust through the years. They’re all a bunch of heavily biased hacks.

We also have a lot people that don't know the difference between a columnist and a reporter.

There used to be tons of independent news organizations and reporters...now they have consolidated to all being controlled by just a few.

For instance, how is WaPo ever going to report anything negative on Amazon??

Me either. It's all political spin. There's no point in paying attention to it anymore.

Most people would be better off if they don’t watch the news.
