LSU Basketball Stats So Far

I normally like to compare our stats to our opponent, but South Carolina is an unknown.
Offensive Stats- (National Rank)
PPG: 86.2 (7th)
ORPG: 10.5 (48th)
APG: 13.1 (171st)
TOPG: 13.7 (185th)
FG%: 49.4% (18th)
3p%: 36.5% (65th)
2p%: 57.8% (14th)
FT%: 77.2% (22nd)
Offensive Efficiency: 1.155 (7th)
Offensive Rebounding Percentage: 33.9% (21st)
Defensive Stats- (National Rank)
PPG: 70.6 (154th)
DRPG: 26.1 (58th)
SPG: 9.3 (14th)
BPG: 2.3 (268th)
Opponent FG%: 40.4% (59th)
Opponent 3P%: 27.6% (21st)
Opponent 2P%: 51.4% (213th)
Opponent Offensive Rebounding %: 30.3% (291st)
Turnovers Forced PG: 15.6 (62nd)
Fouls Committed PG: 17.8 (165th)
Defensive Efficiency: .945 (93rd)
Additional Notes:
When you look at the stats, the top offensive efficiency teams and defensive teams are all pretty good. Only Baylor is near the top at both. Something I found very interesting is that Gonzaga, largely considered the best team in the country with Baylor right behind, hovers around LSU in most categories. In roughly 15 categories on offense and defense, the Zags and Tigers are within 10 spots of each other.
More interesting is that at home, LSU's defensive efficiency is .863 vs 1.104 on the road. For reference, .863 would be a top 15 defensive efficiency team in the country.
In 2019, LSU had a defensive efficiency rating of 1.005 which is CONSIDERABLY worse. Obviously we have only played 5 SEC games, but we are a much more active team this season.
What Do the Stats Say?
Looking at our offensive stats first, I think it's obvious what type of team we have. Trendon Watford, Javonte Smart, and especially Cam Thomas love isolation. We don't have many assists (middle of the road), we are elite at FT's (Thanks, Cam), we rebound offensively at a very high rate (again, thanks Cam and Trendon), and we are electric at scoring. Cameron Thomas is likely top 5 if not the BEST pure scorer in college basketball. Guys like that shoot and they shoot often. Cam is 26 for 83 from 3 for 31.3%. Without him, LSU is shooting 39% from 3 which is top 20 in the country. Obviously that isn't a thing, so we have to look at the impact Cam has even with his forced 3's: Offensive Rebounding. Top 25 in our offensive rebounding percentage, and it's absolutely because Cam gets so much attention which allows players like Darius Days and Trendon to get rebounds.
People get angry with our offensive flow at times (I'm talking to you older man who sits in section 209), but we are an elite offensive team. 7th most efficient team in the country, not sure how you could really ask for much more. If people really watch college basketball, it's a TON of isolation and letting your best players go to work. It's and NBA style approach and it really does work.
Defensively, I'm shocked to see our 3PFG% defense. I don't have to explain that its amazing we are that high, but it's not shocking to see our 2P%. As my friend says, "We don't have a rim protector". However, because of that, we have elite speed and athleticism. So what do we do? We extend pressure, create turnovers. Top 15 in the country in steals and we force people off the 3-point line. Wade has done an exceptional job analyzing our strengths vs weaknesses and honing in on our strengths. The bigger downside is that with that extended pressure and trying to create turnovers, we are really getting hammered by our opponent's offensive rebounding. We have a bit of an undersized team, so we are forced to pick our poison.
Overall
This team is starting to gel and slowly figure it out. Our hardest tests are coming up quickly. We are about to play some really tough teams and we will get a better idea of what we have. I am hopeful this team is starting to buy into this defensive approach, and this gritty team is here to stay. Our scoring will always be there, and if we continue this trend, we could be poised for a deep run. #BootUp

Ball don't lie. Some only see the ones which are made by wide open shooters.
It has been noticeable that those occasions are fewer and fewer now. Seems the players have a better concept of when to double or triple inside and have become more anticipatory of when to leave and rush a perimeter shooter.

We have been much better at staying at home backside

I'm not surprised we're good at it...but I didn't think we were THAT good

It looks a lot like a Will Wade LSU team
Pros:
Great offensive efficiency
Great FG% (Great 2 point FG%)
Great FT %
Great offensive rebounding team (the stat to look at is off rebounding %, not raw numbers)
Cons:
Below average shot defense
Poor defensive rebounding team
The one thing that is MUCH better from last year is LSU's steal %. That is what Wade wants and what can mitigate (to some degree) poor shot defense. With the way they play their shot defense is likely never going to be consistently good. However, your shot defense is better when the other team doesn't get a shot because you took the ball away
Thomas is having a great scoring season, but his efficiency isn't great. It would be much worse if he wasn't automatic from the FT line. But, you live with some of that inefficiency when he gives you 16 on his "bad" night.
The guy who is probably not getting the credit he deserves is Darius Days. His advanced offensive numbers are off the charts good and he leads the SEC in many categories. He's the most efficient offensive player on the most efficient offensive team in the SEC. The guy gobbles up offensive rebounds. He doesn't miss from two. Doesn't turn the ball over. Shoots it decent from FT line and has now become consistent from 3. Watford, Thomas and Smart get the headlines, but Days is the consistent glue that holds it all together

I wouldn’t say we are a below average shot defending team when we are top 75 in the country. The reason our 2-point % is so poor is because of our rebounding. But as you said, we try to get steals and when we don’t it will hurt us somewhere.

Main points of emphasis for Wade moving forward should be limiting turnovers and boxing out. You don’t need a ton of size to be a good defensive rebounding team. Just need good positioning and boxing out.
Our offensive efficiency numbers are insanely good considering we turn the ball over 14 times a game and don’t have a true point guard on the roster.

What I really liked about LSU’s defense in Wednesday’s game was how well they dictated where THEY wanted Arkansas to go offensively. They drove them into traps at the appropriate time and place on the court. They covered the outlets well, they communicated, they helped, they took charges, they blocked out and they rebounded in groups.
Offensively, our big 4 of Watford, Smart, Days, and Thomas are the go to guys in a pretty free flowing set, but I’m liking what Wilkinson and Gaines and Hyatt and LeBlanc and Cook are doing with their garbage buckets, assists, rebounding, and defensive energy. And I think we may be underutilizing Wilkinson. The guy can score and is athletic as hell. The sooner he realizes that the harder it will be for opposing teams and coaches to game-plan against us.

Unfortunately opponent 3P% has very little correlation to future 3P%. Opponent 2P% is a more accurate measure of how a defense will perform.
Good news is that the defense has been playing better the past few games and hopefully that continues tonight.

You could literally say the same thing about 2 point %
