I have an outdoor staircase with iron railing leading to my screened in porch and I'm wanting to put a planter at the bottom/side of with vines growing out and eventually envelope the railing. Tough to explain, but it would look good.

Any tips on what vines to use? Would like evergreen, hearty, and fast growing...

I'm in zone 7 near Chattanooga. I'm planning on going to nursery, but would like to do some homework first if possible. Those old lesbians at our nursery upsell me at every turn I think

That's the best advice I could give in all honesty. Go to a nursery in your area and they should know what would work in your growing zone.

I used to think that about my local nursery. But I’ve learned that they know what the heck they’re talking about. I have stopped being a cheap arse and started listening to them.

Confederate jasmine (trachelospermum jasminoides) pc name is star jasmine.

Fig Vine (ficus pumila)

Virginia creeper (parthenocissus quinquefolia) - dies back in winter

Talk to the plant ladies...

Are you trying to do this for a full length staircase or just a few steps? If you have a full staircase, I'd suggest to not deal with the frustration and disappointment.

Confederate or Carolina jasmine might work.
Climbing ivy?
Mandevilla if you only have a couple of steps worth of railing and don't mind replacing it every year.
