Worth watching to see the end of the series or skip it and pretend like it doesn't exist? I think I've never watched it because everyone says it's really bad. I don't guess I ever realized it was released in 1990 so long after the original 2.

Yeah, it’s worth a view as long as you temper expectations.

Not great by any means.

Pacino is always great, Andy Garcia did good with what he had to work with, but the script was shite in part because the studio was too cheap to pay Robert Duvall what it would take to bring him back as Tom Hagen.

It took more flak than it deserved. If it were a standalone movie it would be decent. Problem is it's part of the Godfather franchise so it's held to an impossibly high standard.

Agreed. I watched it again a few nights ago and forgot how out of place and terrible Sofia Coppola was.

Not to be contrarian, but it’s not that bad of a film overall.

It has its flaws, but it’s still a pretty interesting story about Michael Corleone atoning for his sins and ultimately paying the ultimate price for his evil deeds.

Generally, the knocks on it are Sofia Coppola’s acting and a meh subplot involving the Vatican. I think the bigger issue was not getting Robert Duvall to reprise his role of Tom, and they replaced him by the empty calories George Hamilton character.

I think opinions of it tend to be overly influenced by the fact it’s judged against the previous two films in the trilogy, which just so happen to two of the greatest films ever made.

Agreed with all, especially the bolded text.

If it was a standalone film about a retired mafia don who spent the latter part of his life attempting to both go legitimate and atone for his crimes (and *SPOILERS* ultimately paying the ultimate price with a parent’s worst nightmare), I think it’d be remembered much differently.

It's not as terrible as people remember but it certainly isn't good.

Sofia Coppolla is as bad as advertised though.

I feel sorry for her. She wasn't there because of nepotism - she was actually an emergency replacement when Winona Ryder got sick.

You few, you happy few.

The movie isn't art.

George Hamilton's presence at the beginning just takes me out of it. I'm not old enough for when he was a serious actor so he's just the overly tan joke to me. Watching him in a movie is like if Carrot Top was in there.

Hate the Pacino voice in this one. That damn raspy voice is used. Also the haircut is funny to look at.

Maybe. But I think the helicopter gunship in the middle of a "serious film" would be laughed at no matter what. It could have worked as an update on the modern mob dealing with the Gotti character, but you throw in the Die Hard style skyscraper action scene, and a murky Vatican plot and.....whatever.

This is the A+ take in this thread.

Everyone shits on Sophia Coppola or the incest or the Vatican money laundering or wtf plot.

The Godfather film series died when a fricking Apache shows up to splatter gangsters all over the walls of a penthouse.

Me either. I tried a couple times but lost interest quickly.

They went one movie too far with that franchise.
