Anyone watched this yet? Just starting... I’ve heard it’s good. Pride & Prejudice meets Gossip Girl is how it was described to me.

I like it so far. It’s a fun binge for me.

The wife was watching it the other day. It looked like something I would avoid watching.

I had no idea there was so much diversity in the upper echelons of early-19th century British society. They were certainly ahead of the times.

It's a Shonda Rhimes show, you're gonna get some diversity. There's also a great deal of evidence that Queen Charlotte was black.

Black? No. Of African descent? Probably. She was German just like her husband but was likely descended from an African royal family from the Portuguese side of her lineage. That means she likely had more Arab in her than West African.

How black do you have to be before you're black black?

Just because you’re African doesn’t make you black. Charlize Theron is from Africa and she’s as white as snow.

Charlize Theron is irrelevant. Contemporary accounts describe her as mulatto and having black facial features. From the Washington Post:
quote:
Valdes, who grew up in Belize, began researching Charlotte’s African ancestry in 1967 after he moved to Boston.
He discovered that the royal physician, Baron Christian Friedrich Stockmar, had described Charlotte as “small and crooked, with a true mulatto face.” He also found other descriptions, including Sir Walter Scott writing that she was “ill-colored.” And a prime minister who once wrote of Queen Charlotte: “Her nose is too wide and her lips too thick.”

My wife was watching while I had headphones in and I decided I hated it. She then told me shonda rhimes made the show and that’s all I needed to hear.

I am loving this show. It's sets are gorgeous as are the costumes. All you men hating on this show should really be watching episode 5 with your wife.
Other than Queen Charlotte, who is described as having black features and hair and mixed race skin, yes, there are black actors playing roles that would generally be played by whites. I'm pretty much ignoring the color of anyone's skin. It's sort of like Hamilton that way. I really don't care. It's a fun little romantic drama set in the early 1800's. Beautiful clothes, sets...your wives will love it. And they don't care what you think anyway.

These two sentences don't belong together.

My wife was binging this while I was surfing TD and Reddit on my phone. At some point, it seemed like the show tossed plot out the window and went all in on Fifty Shades. The show seemed stuffy and sophomoric, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t look up and now and then to catch the occasional titty.

She talked me into watching an episode with her to get it started. After the episode she was about to start the next and I just got up and took a shower and laid in bed. I could give a frick about a stupid drama show like this. She binged it in like two days.

I'll genuinely never understand forcing a significant other to watch a show with them. I'll ask mine if he's interested in it before I start it up. If he is, I'll wait to watch it with him. If not, I'll go it on my own.
This is one, as big Jane Austen fan, I'd go on my own. I don't think I'd be real heartbroken about it.

I agree completely. I have never understood those couples that think they have to watch all the same shows together. There's plenty of guy shows that I don't GAF about.
