To those crapping on Harrell, what/who are you looking for, exactly?

I don't even really have an opinion on Harrell. I see the potential positives and negatives and am curious how it would work here.

What I don't understand is this mythical hire that we can realistically get and what sort of offense that unicorn would run.

People who are pushing Calloway over Harrell are the worst. Calloway ran a similar offense (air raid variant) at a MUCH smaller school. Remember, Calloway hasn't even coached at anything close to a UNT level in his career. For you people specifically, please tell me why Calloway is a better decision than Harrell. What, exactly, has Calloway proven as an OC that surpasses the OC resume of Harrell.

Other than the cult of Calloway, whatcha got?

Brady? Stop this pipedream.

Briles? Runs his own variant of the air raid offense and likely isn't an option with his Title 9 history and our issues.

Gus Malzhan for those pushing the "power spread"? If not, which OCs are running that offense at a level you think deserves this job?

I would have been happy with E as OC and Callaway as PGC

Everyone wants what the Saints have: Spread them out, throw it around the field at will, but also utilize the running game when you need to. Pro-style offense. All Air-Raid ain’t gonna work, all read option ain’t gonna work. They both have their uses and are good to win a few games, but not championships. You need to both run & pass.

He could potentially pan out, but I can’t help but roll my eyes over Orgeron going after mostly usc guys again-even if nielesen and harrell have promise. They’re honestly both gambles

An article shitting on Harrell?

...cool

This thread isn't pumping Harrell. I want some realistic options that aren't Harrell to discuss.

I like Calloway and Munoz specifically because they both worked with E

They both are now familiar with some variation of 2019 offense

They are familiar with our players.

Harrell just has zero scheme for his running game. I don't like that spread and never have. The straight air raid.

To also answer your question - I'd take OU co OC

I’m not crapping on him but he doesn’t appear to have the shine he did at North Texas, or ever last year.

I’ve seen USC once this year so I won’t pretend to know exactly what they do on offense.

I also don’t understand the major love for Callaway. He has a solid resume and pedigree but people are yearning for Joe Brady and are trying to fit Russ into that role.

It’s not about Harrell per se. We are 1 season away from winning a championship with an “new” offense that was brought in 2 years ago.

An offense that is run with success by the Saints and other NFL teams and with some variations.

Finding someone who can run and has run thus offense makes more sense than scrapping to go to an almost zero power Air Raid version, an offense that has never won a title, makes no sense.

It would be like the Saints not using the power running game.

I think you gotta go with a Spread/RPO combo, that’s what Brady did last year. With a guy like Max where he can run, hand off, or throw quickly Calloway seemed to be dialing a lot of that in the last couple games, he did leave Os side! Bring back Munoz as PGC, which is basically a QB coach who briefs Max throughout the week on how to pick up on and adjust to the opponents D. An Air Raid is stupid, we don’t have the OL for it and it might help Myles, but does nothing for Max.
Save the money on Calloway/Munoz and get a top $ DC not named Derek Mason.

I just hope we do our due diligence in the interview process and hey if this is the absolute best we can get I’m good with it.

That just isn't realistic. Too complicated for college. The only reason it worked in 2019 was b/c Burrow may literally be the GOAT, with much of his powers being pre-snap reads and Brady-like super computer quick information processing after the snap.

Even NFL players have a tough time consuming the Saints offense. Emmanuel Sanders did just this year and he's a 10+ year vet who has played at a high level in multiple offenses. 2019 was an extreme outlier and we can't just think that we can replicate that again. It is like Auburn fans thinking they could have their 2010 magic without a generational talent like Cam Newton

I want Calloway because he’s as respected as there is among the coaches on the 2020 staff. Everyone (LSU 2020 coaches) believes Russ will be a superstar in the coaching industry.

Then I’d like DJ Mangas to coach the WRs and work with Russ

Sark is running a similar offense to what we want, and similar to what the Saints run, but not wanting to pay $3mm a year for Sark.

Not saying that won’t happen because those two are close, but Mangas hasn’t been an on-field coach the past two years with his last on-field coaching stint coming at William & Mary

Exactly. People don’t understand how unique last season was. Of course everyone wants the Saints offense. Next everyone will want a version of the KC Chiefs offense. The problem is finding someone not named Sean Payton to coach it 24/7 with a future pro QB. That doesn’t just happen. We struck gold with Brady as he was able to install the offense and focus day and night on the details of how to run it. Second part of that is the most important to understand. But once he left the building (and Burrow) we have nothing more than a slide show tutorial and memories. To think someone can just walk in and be successful because “we have the playbook now” is idiotic. Especially with a guy from Samford who the rant adores now because he wears Costas and Bama bangs.

Sark is an innovator. Played in a west coast spread at BYu. Coached a west coast spread at Washington. Then adapted to a modern spread at USC and now Bama.

He's a solid coach like Kiffin.

I haven't seen enough from Harrell that he can adapt I've just seen so far a one trick pony of a full on air raid.

We need to help our defense as much as possible and that's having a complimenting running game to kill some time off the clock.

i think he's one of the few guys running that offense, and that is NOT what we ran in 2019

not really. it's like a better version of Malzhan's offense (b/c of better QB and WR talent)

it would also take a good bit to develop the OL for that. we'd need much more of a post-2010 Miles OL that's all power (we've been recruiting much more for Zone since O took over)
