I know, its Johnston Murphy. However, one little secret about JM is the Aristocraft line. The Aristocrafts are goodyear welted and are made with better leather. The price reflects it too as they go for around $300.

JM has them on sale right now for $139. That is a steal for goodyear welted shoes. A decent goodyear welt shoe usually starts at $300.

Go to JM website, enter Aristocraft in the search box.

Was just in my closet thinking about the hit the European shops must be taking right now. Worn dress shoes 10 times since this started.

Mine are all dusty. I think I've worn a pair of dress shoes once since March.

They, Cole Haan and Floresheim used to be great American made shoes. All China and India now. Just can't do that. (Nike destroyed Cole Haan). Allen Edmonds (which are most all still made in America) is almost always on sale (Calerese is trying to kill a great brand here) or just save up and get some Aldens.

I have 3 pairs of Allen Edmonds and they've held up well. You can occasionally find them on sale for sub $200. Alden's are more expensive than I'm willing to pay for shoes.

Totally agree with you about J&M. However, the Aristocrafts are still well made and harken back to their better days.

For $139, that is a good price and a good cobbler can recraft the shoe when it wears down.

Yeah, I haven't worn much in the way of dress shoes this years but I"ve bought boots. AE has some good sales right now on boots, especially the Pattons and Hamiltons. I've got several pair of Higgins Mills and love wearing them this time of year.

One day we will return to normal. Going to need decent shoes then. ;-)

Waldorf: AE quietly moved Domincian production back to the US this year. I think one reason for the sales is they are pulling out of the nonAE retail. Dillards, Brooks Brothers, and Nostrum quit carrying them. No more middleman so that is an expense cut out.

I find JM runs slightly large by 1/4-1/2 size. I'm usually a 13 and have bought 3 pairs over the years and all seemed slightly big. The problem is there's no 12.5 usually. Shoes go to full sizes after 12.

Same exact experience for me for the most part down to shoe size

Oh yes. I have two pairs of Hamiltons and wear them all the time. Best shoe/boot they have introduced in a while.

I heard about that with the welted lines all coming back. I still don't trust Caleres. That is what scares me about all of these back-to-back-to-back sales. Caleres needing cash flow and not really understanding what made Allen Edmonds the company there are/were.

Look at the shoes on sale. Dress shoes that probably took a beating this year. 40% of AE sale this year has been the casual stuff. Hence why you are seeing more sneaker dress shoes and boots.

And they make pretty damn good boots.

Back when I wore JM the better line than I had was $1000 a pair. I wore holes clean through the soles on a few pair. Burgundy and black, was FAF in the 10th grade.
