My son no longer watches any real TV, just youtube and plays XBox. Will eventually get him a Series X when available, but since I have nothing to give him for Christmas, I figured I would upgrade his TV. What should I be looking for besides 4K? Talking 40ish inch for this one.

HDMI 2.1 port(s) and a decently high "gaming" score on rtings.

ETA: not a TV guru, but I'd just hop on rtings see if you can filter by size, look for the two things above and pick the one with those features, then pick one with other high scores in other fields in your price range.

Sounds like what he would want would be a gaming monitor.
Maybe something like this: LINK

That's just 27" but there's a 38" for 1500 bucks.

How about you get him a basketball goal of something. Don’t promote video games and being a nerd

As GurleyGirl mentioned a monitor would be better for strictly gaming. You should talk to your son about wanting a monitor versus a television.
A high-quality monitor is better due to having higher refresh rate & input lag, but if he just uses his console to watch youtube & netflix then a nice 4K television would be better.

Yea, you can watch youtube & television on a monitor.

The only difference between a 4K television and a monitor will be price, size, and refresh rate.

If he plans on watching a lot of youtube & netflix I would just get him a television. If he plays games, the monitor is a very noticeable difference due to the increased refresh rate.

It might be best to talk to him about it, because he would need a sound setup to use a monitor if he isn't sitting near the desk. The smaller screen might also impact the distance he can sit from it as well.
