Louisiana to get $342.2 million to promote broadband investment

(The Center Square) – Thirteen broadband providers in Louisiana will share $342.2 million in federal dollars meant to promote high-speed internet access in areas where it’s not currently available.

The program is meant to subsidize development of internet infrastructure in areas where there aren’t enough potential customers to otherwise justify the investment.

A total of $9.2 billion was doled out nationwide to 180 bidders, the Federal Communications Commission says. Providers must meet periodic buildout requirements that will require them to reach all assigned locations within six years.

Segnem Egere Consortium bid $142.4 million to serve 22 parishes, the most of any of the Louisiana winners. Rural Electric Cooperative Consortium qualified for $113.7 million of support to invest in 22 parishes.

Space Exploration Technologies, led by SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, received $26.6 million to invest in 57 parishes.

Amazing news for the country folks. I can't wait for the opportunity to access Starlink, but I'm glad there is enough motivation for competition as well. But does anyone know anything about SEGNEM EGERE? They won almost all of the monies in my parish, but I can't find anything out about them on google other than they won a bunch of money in this latest auction.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Anyone already have Electric\Co-op broadband? Are these groups mostly laying fiber on current poles? Fixed wireless solutions?

Nextier Consortium got mine, and we are supposed to get gigabit. This is going to improve rural property values.

Any ideas on timeline for implementation? Given the goal of the initiative, I would think timeliness was a factor in bid approval.

Starlink doesn't sound cheap - $500 buy in (dish, setup, etc) and $99 per month...

Even at that price it is an incredible value compared to other satellite services.

People are already getting sub 40 ms. in beta with only half of the satellites in the sky. It is suppose to be sub 20 ms when it’s fully operational.

Hopefully late summer it will be available for beta here. I’d sign up for the beta now if you want a chance to be early.

A lot of states are doing this as they receive federal grants for "infrastructure".

This is an incredible waste of money and only works to strengthen local monopolies on Internet access.

Starlink seems expensive because they don't get as much in subsidies as the cable companies.

And also they have to recoup billions in R&D and deployment costs in a reasonable time frame.

Assuming the Parish President & Government, and not the companies themselves will be deciding which homes get serviced?

Windstream will spend it where they can get the most paying customers on line that they can with the money they have to spend on fiber. I guess that makes business sense, but that MO doesn't ever favor the truly rural areas.

That's why I am waiting on Starlink. Hughesnet currently, even as bad as it is, it's still better than the Windstream DSL that I had.

And is lower US next year a reasonable hope?
