So I’m having to make a decision with my 10 year old lab. First off I’m not looking to put him down cause he is in great health. I’m trying to decide if I want to spend the money to get his back hips fixed, if it’s even possible if they are not too far gone, or get him a wheelchair so he can still run around. I’m guess I’m just trying figure out my options.

Has anyone felt with a wheelchair for a dog or had surgery to fix hip dysplasia on their dog?

Ask your vet about laser treatments. My 12 yr. old lab tore an ACL. Vet wanted to send him to a surgeon $5000.00. I told them that was a no go. Then they did 6 or 7 lazer treatments and the difference is amazing. That was about 8 months ago. Worth asking about. Good luck.

cosequin for dogs
I swear it works
My dog would get the numb legs when he was around a year old, and he had the hip dysplasia skip. Vet said she could do surgery or I could try the cosequin. Started him on the cosequin and 8 years later. He hasn’t ever had a problem since. He will be ten in a week and other than sleeping more, he is as active as ever. Best of luck.

I think the ticket with Cole Quinn though is to start then early on it.
My late GSP had it bad but she stayed active until cancer got her. Its never too late to start, I just wonder if it will be effective.

They have hip replacements for dogs now.

It is not cheap but it does seem very effective. Google it. I know there is vet in Covington that does it and LSU does it.

As others have said, try everything else before surgery. My sleeping partner was hit and killed Friday after t-day. You do whatever needs to be down to make your partner comfortable. Don’t let him suffer when the time comes.

The surgery hip surgery is almost common now. I think there are alot of vets that will perform it. I had my labs done several years back. I think $500? She runs like a deer pain free. Big thing is once they have the surgery that's it they won't ever have the pain from dysplasia or arthritis in the hip again.

That may be the case, my boy has been on it for nearly a decade and was still a young pup when he started it.

I'm watching this topic. I have a 4 yr old lab that acts like she's 10 due to her hips not being right. We noticed it around 2yrs old and the vet honestly didn't offer much help on it.

Hi Stamant,

what surgical procedure is your vet recommending? is it a femoral head ostectomy? I typically dont recommend that in larger breeds but talk to your vet about outcome probabilities. Some of the agents suggested by other posters can definitely help and would not hurt to try. Physical therapy is something that some specialist will do and could help some, but in the end that may wind up costing just as much as the surgery.

Here is a link to a description of an FHO procedure to help you think about what is entailed.

The vet told me a few months back that it was Arthritis and hip dysplasia and to give home glucosamine supplements. I’ve tried that and it’s just getting worse. They didn’t give any other options on what I could do so, I’m trying to do my own research to see what I can do. I ordered some of the supplements listened earlier to try and see if that helps but I have a feeling I’m going to have to bring him to another vet to see if their are any more options I can do.

I’ve had success with these & also human glucosamine supplements
It’s been years so I can’t remember what the dosage was for my American Bulldog

Ask your vet about Deramaxx and Gabapentin. They are pain pills that help to manage. That’s what I’m giving my 9.5 yo GSD right now. Also, I give her Movoflex (can get on Amazon), as a joint supplement.

None of these will fix the dysplasia, but it sounds like you are in the same boat I am. This helps to manage the pain.

My dog was run over at 4mo old and fractured her left hip. Doctor chose to wait and see on surgery at that time. She showed no issues until earlier this year, when she started dragging her leg. At 10 years old, surgery just doesn’t make sense. The dysplasia had progressed further each month, but the pills keep her pain managed.

Hope this helps..

Had an FHO done on my lab about 8 years ago. She can still run like a deer. She’s older and lazy now but was like new after the surgery. She’s a smaller lab though. 60lbs or so. The surgery wasn’t too expensive if I remember correctly. 700?
