Have a similar situation, but they run into the back. Only time they temporarily stop is when they hit the wood support piece running down the middle with their head. As others have stated, I use the felt pads which makes it easier to glide, but avoids scratches.
I would avoid the rubber stoppers because they can leave black marks if the kids get enough of momentum.
