I learned today that there is a thing called stay to play. These competitions require people to stay at only “approved” hotels during the completion. In order to book a room, you have to use a particular link that is sent to you.

By using this link, you are agreeing to pay upfront the entire cost of the stay and the only way you can receive a refund in the event you should cancel is if the entire event is canceled. Even then, you are required to pay a $50 fee.

You can book at these hotels through another third party, but you must fill out a waiver that has to be approved. Teams are audited to be sure everyone is in compliance. If a team is not in compliance, they cannot compete.

My question is how is this even remotely legal and ethical? Not much pisses me off, but this has me boiling?

Inbe4 I’m too poor, I knew what I was getting into, yada yada.

Stay to play is on tons of youth sports. Your tournament has to have enough clout but yeah we deal with it in softball. Only with the bigger national type tournaments.

If you don’t like it, don’t put your kid in cheer. Sounds pretty simple to me.

Sounds like someone is getting a kickback from group sales.
Most of the time they just offer a group rate, there really isn't a reason to do "stay to play" for some youth event for event coordinators unless the price is incredibly low.

Well, we never signed a contract. It’s fricking cheer.

I know the organizers are getting a kickback. That’s blatantly obvious, hence the question of legality.

Most of the time they offer better group rates for stay to play but I’m sure the tournaments get some money back.

The rates are about $100 more a night than Expedia offers. There is no group rate. Which is what pisses me off.

Very interesting. At 8:47, I experienced this same thing and had 100% same thoughts/reactions. Hyatt Regency, Dallas?

I think every tournament in soccerdom has a stay to play requirement. I usually just book a few rooms at a required hotel and tell the tournament we are in compliance. The tournament never checks.

I think it’s a crock of shite that; even though you book at an “approved” hotel, but didn’t use the supplied link, that transaction has to be approved by the organizers.

America’s society would be better off if half of the population insisted on this policy.
