Personally my favorite elk rife is my .338 Win Mag. I’ve also shot several with a .300 Win Mag that did the job. I have watched about a dozen or so other elk get shot with a .270 win, .30-06, 7mm REM Mag, .300 RUM, .338-378 Weatherby. And I’m probably forgetting a few calibers. Point is they all will kill an elk but I prefer the magnums so you can take that hard quartering shot or shoulder shot on that elk of a life time if he shows up and be confident it will be an ethical shot to take. My advice is tote the biggest caliber (within reason, I’m not talking about a 600 NE) that you can shoot accurately with out flinching. Also, use a quality bullet and it might take some experimenting. My .388 only likes 225 Grain or heavier and it cost me a few hundred dollars of Ammo to figure this out.
