I had a situation about a week ago driving down I-110 where a metal basket (picture shopping cart minus the wheels) came bouncing across the lanes and hit the bumper on my truck. Not much damage, but truck is less than 5 months old. Reached out to my agent who is a longtime friend and was told it would be covered under my $0 deductible comp. The adjuster tells me today it is collision which has a deductible. As stated, not much damage but on a new, nice truck I hoped to get it fixed. Small scratches on painted bumper and scratches/gouges in the air dam below the bumper.

Anyone have experience on which coverage scenario applies? Agent and adjuster arguing it out for now.

Did you collide with it or comprehend it?

There’s your answer.

I’m guessing comprehensive. Husband was driving and hit a raccoon — did a giod bit of damage and it was under comp.

This was many years ago and Farm Bureau.

Comprehensive coverage is a type of insurance that protects your car from things other than an accident, like falling objects and vandalism. Collision coverage is a different type of insurance that covers damage to your own vehicle due to a collision with another car or object.

Went through something similar about 6 months ago with wife hitting something in the road she couldn't avoid. And a chargeable accident as well when you file the claim.

It’s collision. Would only be comp if you hit an animal.

They will choose whichever one befits them the most and you will bend over and take it like a man.

Except it’s clearly stated in the policy that no one cares to read.

Just remove the air dam. It comes off with a few screws.

Stationary object of a vehicle it’s collision. You say the basket was moving, that’s comp.

I know this for a fact; DO NOT tell insurance it bounced. Once it contacts the ground, it’s collision. MAKE sure you tell them it was in the air, that is comp.

Yep. Same thing happened to me. A piece of tire tread kicked up by the car in front of me. My agent told me that they considered it a “falling missile.” It was covered under comprehensive. If it was laying in the road and I hit it, then it would’ve been collision.
