Frustrating round yesterday

80 is my best score ever. I was 5 over on the front looking like I was going to be low 80s yet again. Turned it up on the back. I was 1 over going into 18 shooting for a 76 if I were to par.
Tee shot landed next to a tree that I got a lucky punch on that set me up to clear a creek at 180 yards with a 6 iron and about 40 yards from the green. Bladed a 58 degree wedge into a sand trap, 2 strokes to get out of sand and 3 putted for a 9. Ultimate choke job for an 80. I had not been playing my 58 degree on that shot all day and I have no clue why I pulled it there.
This particular chip shot is the shot I mentioned in the other thread that costs me a lot of strokes and it was on fire yesterday until 18. So aggravating. But, the comments in that thread have given me the ability to hit this shot more effectively.
Cushioning the blow though, I won the round and won $100 overall so there is that. But damn, I wish I would have pulled the 9 and gave the ball a bump and run instead of trying to flop it on the green.

I got home and saw that and told my buddy that at least I stopped before I hit double digits unlike Tiger.
That was a brutal hole to watch. Insult to injury was him seemingly tweaking his back out of the sand trap.

Leave yourself a full club into the green. If this shot is consistently giving you trouble you have to change your strategy.

We all have stories like that. A couple months ago, I was -2 on 18 tee box. I had only broken par once in my life.

I generally go this route but if I would have done this here, it would have cost me another layup shot because of my tee shot. Even given the same circumstances again, I would have played it the same on the first three shots. I played the bump and run shot several times yesterday and landed really well on virtually all of them, but I didn't even think about club selection on 18. It was just a bad decision flat out.
On the other side of the creek, there isn't anywhere you can land to get a full swing on any club. Really only 50 yards between the creek and green. I landed 30-40 yards away from the green so I barely cleared the creek as it was.

This is the second time I've been on 18 with a realistic chance at breaking 80. Last time I had to par it. this time I just needed to get out with a triple or less. Lol. This one was a pressure choke big time.

For some reason pressure and nerves make us all make boneheaded decisions like this. If I were you this would be the biggest thing to take away, next time allow yourself to hit shots you're most comfortable with in high pressure/nervy situations.

538 yard par 5. Probably 425 to the creek.
The tee shot is what ultimately set the hole up bad but I felt recovered enough after the third shot. Normally a decent drive landed anywhere in the fairway, followed by a 150 yard 9 iron sets you up good for approach over creek and onto the green.
My tee shot landed next to a tree and couldn't get a whole stroke on the ball which means I got 75 yards on my second shot instead of a 150 yard 9 iron shot. The ball was a foot to the right of a tree. I'm right handed so the tree was where my body needed to be. Second shot was a lower percentage shot (180ish 6 iron) for me but I ended up clearing the creek and really not in bad positioning. The shot that slammed the door shut was the knucklehead 4th shot.
First shot was bad execution, second shot decent recovery, third shot set me up for a chance at up and down, forth shot broke my back and 5 strokes later. . . I barely limped in with the win.

This is exactly what I fell into and the crap part is I knew better. Definitely learned from this one to pull my head out of my arse in this situation next time.

Play the hole backwards in your mind thinking of what clubs you would want to hit into the green, then back from there. You may not need to hit driver off the tee.

I hear you, man...My best score ever is 76 which I've shot three times now.
Today at Beaver Creek, I shot a 35 on the front after 3 birdies and 2 bogeys (one should have been a par; I missed a 3 ft. par putt on number 1).
All I had to do was score decent on the back nine for my best score ever. Unfortunately, on holes 11-15, I went bogey, bogey, double, bogey, double!
Finished par, birdie, bogey to at least score a somewhat respectable 43, but ended up shooting 78.
Been replaying the entire back 9 in my head all damn day and probably will until I get back out there again. Freaking golf, man....

I’m not great. 9.7 index.
Shot 79 Thursday with 7 straight pars to finish.
Went out Saturday. Tried my best and shot 94.
My scores are bizarre.
I’ve got two 79s and some 90s in my last 20.

Ha. Same story here.
My normal play is mid 80s. With this group, everyone tends to shoot higher than their handicap for whatever reason and I'm usually upper 80's low 90s. We've been playing a course more often than others that has screaming fast greens. Unless you're within 3 feet putting, it's very difficult to get the ball where you want it.
I get 15 strokes with this group, and Sunday we had a 3 handicap show up so I got 12 strokes. The 80 score was unadjusted for handicap. After handicap it was 68 so really a good round based on those numbers. I just had a hell of a day. Hit well out of the sand a couple of times, had a LOT of pars, drove good, approach shots were good, putter was on fire. I had one three put for a bogey, the rest was 1 and 2 putts. Everything was clicking Sunday for my game with the one hole exception. That's why you play 18 though.
Some days, only one part of my game is clicking and that's when it's tough.
