I think I am the only guy on this board that thinks this is a good idea. I know everybody says CJ is a natural safety and that we shouldn't take him out of this position, but I think he could be involved in more plays as a linebacker. I also think he could easily play at 230 lbs and be lightning fast. Additionally, I think there is a move to make defenses faster to counter the new up tempo offenses (i.e. Texas and Auburn over the last decade).

Semantics. He'll "function" as an RPG.

I agree, with all of the spread offenses, regardless of his position we need him on the field. He doesn't have to be a full time LB, but just keep him in the game.

BTW, Jones will start at safety per Dandy Don, so that puts this matter to rest.

This makes more sense than the thread that got started last week about some guy wanting Trindon to play defensive end.

As defensive teams struggle to deal with new variations of the spread offense, teams will be playing a more hybrid-type LB-FS. USC has a beast who weighs 230 and runs a 4.45. Georgia I think has a similar kind of guy. Read the latest SI. This is a very good fit for Chad Jones in our attempt to defend the likes of Appy State, Aub, the Crocs, et. al.

I agree with you...sort of. Let's not call it a linebacker, but let's give him 80% of the responsibilities of a linebacker. He will be called a "rover" or a "hybrid" or whatever. I just think it makes more sense than people think. I know it's "out of the box" thinking, but he such an exceptional athlete I think it works.

Once again an idiot misquoting. I said nothing about playing defensive end. Try reading a thread before you post on it...

And I agree that more speed is needed on Def these days with the spread. Give TH a chance.

You know you wanna see it and see it work well...

Agreed. But LSU will play a lot of nickel. He WILL BE OUT there. Call him what you want. If you prefer nickelback, then call him that instead of "hybrid-LB".

You don't take the most prototypical safety in the country and turn him into a weak linebacker. Let him spend his one year splitting time at both safety positions with Taylor and Coleman. Let him play rover at his current weight. I wouldn't under any circumstances ask him to put on useless weight at a position he would still be undersized for, especially when you consider he projects to play safety in the NFL.

with talented safety like coleman, it would be a good move to have Chad Jones play linebacker part-time. he has the size and it would be deadly having a linebacker that can run a 4.3 40.

He's like 210 or 215. Our linebackers are all above 230.

Hey I don't mind the flames or discussions, just don't misquote when you do.

Good point Stagg, LB for CJ would be bad move.
