The Alberto has been my knot since I started using braid and I thought I tried them all. The FG is the shite, hands down. Indisputably the thinnest and from my testing the strongest, so I stand corrected. Not the easiest knot to tie but once you get a routine and your fingers train themselves it's only moderately more time consuming.

Spend a little down time constructively learning it and thank me later. To those who already knew this

I almost always use a swivel, so I never learned anything other than uni to uni.

Fg is a beast but a bitch to tie in a kayak and hard to tie with very thin lines. For inshore and offshore with a boat, it's unbeatable IMO

I started fishing with an fg this year and have only had my line break off one time and it was at the braid before the fg knot. Tested it out this summer on plenty of upper slot reds and it held up well. Tie about a 7 ft fluro leader and don’t worry about it for 6 months

THE FG KNOT IS THE BEST, but I don't have time for that lol. I always use either a double uni knot, or a double double uni knot. The double double uni knot is basically a double uni but you double up the braid before you tie the uni knot. I never fish anywhere or for anything that's worth using a fg knot over a double uni, but I think there is a bobin to make it easier and faster. I can't stand casting knots through my guides so I only use leader knots less than 24" long or over 50yds long. And even then my lazy arse just uses a double double uni. I have 3 penn squall 30lws for trolling bull redfish with 50lb braid connected to 80-100yds of 50lb mono topshot that is double double uni knotted together. The rods those squalls are on have big enough eyes that I didn't see the need to tie an fg knot, so I went with a double double uni since it doesn't bind up in the eyes.

If you fish for tuna and sailfish, use a fg knot. If you need the smallest knot you can make use a fg knot. If you want something that won't ever get caught on your guides use an fg knot. If you don't need any of those above things, save yourself some time and headache and do a double uni knot.

REMEMBER that if your twists on the fg knot are not perfect IT WILL FAIL, also if you don't tighten down the braid to the point it cuts into the mono/flouro before applying pressure to the end of the leader IT WILL FAIL!

Just went through a YouTube rabbit hole on the FG knot and found this video that made it seem pretty easy to tie

Buddy of mine swears by the Shin's knot. I haven't tried it yet.

Shin's knot is also called a Lazy Alberto, I've used it and it's good knot but old news imo

I’ve always used a simple surgeons knot. Never had a failure

Never tried it, but this is what I was thinking looking at it. I always use double uni and never really been an issue.

FG Pro Tip: Once tied I dab the entire knot with a little superglue. Holds the tag end down and I find makes it even easier to go through the eyelets.

This is what I generally do. It has never failed but you have to keep the leader on the shorter side because the knot does not like to go through the rod eyelets.

30# braid to 20# mono for TW & FatBoys uni/uni and have never broken off even on rubber lips.
30# braid to 20# floro for jigs triple surgeons loop.
Not sure why some get so wrapped up in knots

Never had the uni to uni knot fail. I'm inshore, using light tackle, fishing for specks, reds and an occasional big Jack that puts it to the test. I fish mostly topwater using a 24 inch fluorocarbon shock leader with braid and the Mickey Mouse loop knot. The Mickey Mouse loop knot is the best. LINK

When I'm fishing for big trout with hard plugs that cost $7-$15/piece knots play a big part.

They effect the action of the bait (I tie a loop knot to lure)

A good knot that passes through the guides allows me to tie a longer leader so I can change lures and retie without having to tie on a new leader. Also I can snip off damaged parts of leader and retie.

Knot integrity allows me to have my bait in the water more which turns into more fish.
