Payton made two huge gambles that luckily paid off

1. Calling a timeout after the Bears TE fumbled and it was ruled forward progress.
I know this infuriated everyone, myself included. Had they called it immediately on the field then no one would be pissed at this perceived attempt at a screw job. But Payton calling a timeout after the play, giving the Bears a free timeout in the process, wasn't smart. Payton burned a TO just to yell at the refs, where in the end it didn't change anything. It assisted the Bears in driving the field for the FG to sent it to OT.
2. Not running the clock all the way down before the winning FG
For many this is moot because Lutz made the FG. But this shows Payton's arrogance that can win a game as much as it can lose a game. The end result of this game should only have been a Saints win or a tie game. A tie would suck, but it's better than a loss. If Lutz were to miss it (and lets be honest, the odds that he would make it were super high) the Bears would have plenty of time and timeouts to get into position for the win. Had that happened, Payton would be roasted.
All this said, the defense isn't good enough to take that gamble. Not with the way we commit penalties in the secondary.
Oh well...live by the sword, die by the sword.

he showed full faith in his boy, his kicker, even after a missed chip shot earlier
I won't be upset in putting faith in someone who has now won you 3 straight games

I don't think many here doubt Lutz's abilities, but there was no reason to not take that clock down and kick. This was pissed-off, petty Payton and glad his low-risk gamble paid off.

This is just so stupid. How does that show any more faith in his kicker than kneeling twice and then kicking the field goal. All kneeling twice does is preclude the Bears from being able to win the game (with the exception of a blocked field goal). As the OP said it was arrogant Payton, and it wasn't smart.

All of this. Player safety isn't a risk during a kneel down, so why not drain it all the way down to 30ish seconds then kick it on 3rd?

TO was not a terrible call. The Bears were lined up to snap it for when they wound the clock. He got to jaw at the ref more and make sure his defense was ready.

My only thinking about the field goal would be if you miss it, you could still hold the bears and get the ball back.

We should've run the clock down. That was just stupid.

I would have run the clock down and made sure the ball was centered where the kicker wanted it.
But when you play your gut and win you are the goat for a day!

These “gambles” didn’t “pay off”. These were errors that we won in spite of.

I didn’t hate kicking the ball to win the game.
Team and Kamara were tired. Kamara bobbled the ball a few plays before on an easy pass and dropped the ball after being tackled because he wasn’t holding it as tight as he should have been. That plus the two near interceptions are reasons not to run a play.
As for kneeling it, they had two time outs so it’s not like a ton of time would have been run off.
If there was a botched snap or something, we could have covered it and had another chance to kick it.
We were in good range and besides that earlier kick, Lutz has been an amazing kicker. So just go out and win the game.
I know the announcers were full of questions which makes others question the call, but as a fan I was fine with kicking it there.

I am OK with not running the clock down cause it tells your kicker (who had already missed one) i have 100% confidence you will make this.

That rationale shows even less faith in your kicker. It was not a smart move by Payton but luckily didn't matter in the end. I would rather tie than lose on a boneheaded decision to not run the clock down before a missed/blocked FG.

Wrong. they had just used their last time out

It is not that gamble #2 paid off. It just didn't come back to bite us. I am not complaining. We got the W.

The Bears did not have any timeouts when Lutz kicked the FG in OT. They called one the play right after the 2 minute warning and before the attempt in OT to ice Lutz.

That's why you take 2 knees and kick it on 3rd down.

Lutz literally missed a chip shot earlier in the game. Even great kickers miss kicks.

Most intelligent fans were questioning the decision to not run down the clock as well.

You can still have 100% confidence in a kicker and kneel the ball twice. Just because you have 100% confidence in something doesn't mean it's guaranteed to happen.

The time out was fine considering the magnitude of the play
Had to make sure that it couldn’t be looked at

My first thought was like every one else, "that's an unnecessary timeout". Then during the timeout I changed my mind. SP called a timeout so his defense could regroup after the celebration.

The turnover was to be looked at no matter what Payton did, the TO was to complain about the clock management buy the refs, since forward progress had been called the clock should have started running again immediately, the Bears got extra time on the scoring drive because of the mistake by the refs.
