Pinehurst trip......wow it really does live up to the hype

Just returned last night from Pinehurst. What a great trip this was. Highly recommend for anyone looking to make this jaunt. We played 81 holes in less than 3 days. I'll give a recap of what we played.
Day 1:
Dormie Club, this course is only 10 years old. It was designed by Ben Crenshaw. They are building the clubhouse now and it will be ready by next spring. It's only a 10 minute drive from Pinehurst village.
Incredible layout....you truly feel you are at golf destination at this course. They give you a really nice engraved metal bag tag when you finish.
After that was over we headed to The Cradle. It's a par 3 course layed out in front of the Pinehurst clubhouse. This was so much fun!! DO NOT miss this if you go.
you carry 3-4 clubs of your choosing. And we walked it barefoot as many people do. The shortest hole was 46 yards, longest was 117. They change the tees every 3 hours. Its a 50 dollar green fee, you can play it as many times as you want. Grab a drink at the Deuce before you start and then there is a beverage barn to grab another after hole 3 that you pass twice.
When done with this, head over to putting green for some more fun. They keep the exact speeds and undulation as they do on #2. So much more respect for pros after doing this. Wow!!! It's tough
Then we went, grabbed a drink and sat on the porch while enjoying the scenery of #18 on the No. 2 course. Get a picture with the Payne Stewart statue and walk through pro shop to load up
Day 2:
Round 1, Southern Pines Golf Club. This course is over a 100 years old. So well maintained. It's a 10 minute drive from the Village. Probably the least favorite of the courses we played, but still incredible. That's just how many great layouts they have around Pinehurst
Between rounds we headed to Smithfield BBQ and Chicken. Great spot for a legit North Carolina BBQ sandwich. Chopped pork topped with coleslaw and vinegar based sauce. Hit the spot for sure
Round 2: Pinehurst #9. two of us are Clubcorp memebers, so we got to play for $35 dollars and guests were $88
Normally a $285 dollar green fee. The was the best $35 green fee ever. LOL
It's a Nicklaus design and was built in mid 80's
I imagine this is how all the Pinehurst courses are manicured. Absolutely pristine. It's set in a neighborhood with some really nice houses on course.
We absolutely loved the layout and this course. Would highly recommend.
Last day:
Tobacco Rd, this course was the one we were all told to make sure we play. This course is extremely challenging. Blind tee shots and blind shots to greens all over the place. It was truly a spectacular place to play, but honestly I wouldn't play it again unless I live there. It is very difficult and even have spotters on first hole.
You must play it once though because the scenery is unreal and it is truly a golfers course. Not for beginners
We mostly cooked at the condo for dinner. We were going to go to Pinehurst Brewery, but the wait was 45 minutes. Locals said it was very overrated so we were fine not waiting.
We ended up at Maxies Tavern and Tap room. I ate there Sunday while waiting on the group to get in. Some of the best wings I've ever had and there place is set up perfectly for sports. It's more of a locals place which was nice

Nice.
Going next week. Tobacco Road, #3 and southern pines. Cradle on one of the afternoons.
Our schedule changed and we have more time than first anticipated so hope to play #2.

I was told by so many people not to play #2
That its not worth difference at $500. To go get a picture with payne statue and check out the grounds, cradle and putting green. Seems like it was very good advice based on our trip.
Obviously there is something to say thats cool to saying you played #2. But thats what everyone said that i discussed about playing it

Which Pinehurst courses are a part of ClubCorp?

Only #9 has that affiliation. If you are a clubcorp O.N.E golf member you can play 2 rounds a year for cart fee there

We have been back and forth on if we wanted to play it. Finally said screw it, if we can get a tee time we going to play it. If not just improvise.

Thats how we thought about it as well. In the end we decided not to once I found out we could play #9 for so cheap.

I will say this and i know it all depends on your situation and timing. If you don’t get to play #8, #2 and #4 Id reconsider when you have more time. Those courses are absolutely amazing. I was not a big fan of #9 for various reasons and I would not play it again. For $35 though it’s a good deal.

I heard Pine Needles was excellent. We have already decided that 3 years out we are making the trip again. We want to play Pine needles, #8 and either #4 or #2. So it was one of those things were we decided to take advantage of the clubcorp deal this time around and play tobacco rd
I thought I played a lot of golf while there.

When I was getting off the highway and saw the "pinehust" exit I literally felt like an eith year old on Christmas Morning.

It was strictly golf and a small break for food for Thursday and Friday. Saturday and Sunday were a bit more relaxing as we didn't have to rush around and shite.
If you can swing it, play #2 and #4. #2 is a US Open host site for a reason. You may not get all the spectacular views as some of the other courses, but playing those greens is the most fun I've had playing golf in a while. There's something about being a a couple steps off the green or having a 20 foot birdie putt with very real potential to not be on the green after that shot. And better yet, probably a greenside bunker. It just makes you focus and think about every shot. Also - if you do play get a caddie. Walking a course without worrying about your clubs, the yardage or where to line up your putt makes the experience significantly better. Truly a great experience.
Now #4 - an absolutely beautiful course.
Pine Needles and #9 were the two courses I would not play again. Pine Needles was fun but just wasn't memorable for me. And at $200+ a green fee - I will skip when I go back. #2, #4 #8 and Tobacco I cannot recommend enough.

I would respectfully disagree about your assessment of #2. It's a US Open course for a reason and to have the ability to play it makes it a must play for me. I got fortunate enough to play a college tournament there and the experience was fantastic.

I am trying to get a group up to go to Pinehurst next year. Roughly what kind of money did you have in the trip? I assume you stayed 4 nights? Drove there and settled, 3 days of golf and then drove home?

It's a must to have a forecaddie on Tobacco Road, especially if it's your first time through.

I’m sure for a college level player the course is as good as it gets.
When you have a 16 handicapper in your group you take that into consideration.

For 3 nights at Linville Gardens condo with 3 rounds of golf(Dormie, southern pines and tobacco) it was just under 700
Cradle is 50 and you don’t want to miss that.
You can always pick another course and pay for the green fee separately
We chose #9 since it was so discounted for us just made since
