First ‘Narco-Submarine’ Caught in Europe After Crossing the Atlantic

ALDÁN, Spain—In a craggy bay here early one morning last year, police watched three men clamber from the hatch of a curious vessel barely breaking the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.
The 66-foot craft slowly sank as the men swam ashore, where officers grabbed two of them. Police struggled for two days to tow their waterlogged quarry to port, where they found roughly 3 metric tons of cocaine onboard, worth some $100 million.
For the first time, they had captured a formidable vessel in drug runners’ flotilla: a trans-Atlantic “narco-submarine.”
South America is awash with cocaine, and traffickers are turning to new ways of getting it to Europe, which the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says may have surpassed the U.S. as the world’s largest market.
Narco-subs have ferried cocaine from Colombia to Central America since the 1990s and recently proliferated. Rarely true submarines, they are generally semisubmersibles that float mostly but not completely below the waterline and are nearly undetectable. Most are built out of sight in South American jungles for around $1 million apiece.
The November discovery off Spain’s northwestern coast was the first confirmation of persistent rumors that they can also reach Europe, where the bulk of cocaine arrives hidden in container ships at major ports.
“It’s a game changer,” said Michael O’Sullivan, head of Europe’s Maritime Analysis and Operations Center, which helps coordinate European antidrug agencies.
Narco-subs are described as low-tech, uncomfortable and hazardous, earning them the nickname ‘water coffins.’:
After a ventilation pipe broke, the crew of the narco-sub had to open a hatch to have fresh air, according to law-enforcement officials.:

Where’d the other 3 tons go?

I would be absolutely terrified to try to sail one of those across the Atlantic. And wouldn’t it be far easier to hide it in some shipping containers or something?

Good one
You were under a lot of *pressure* to come up with that so quickly, , in fact, it may be an *all time low*.

Those little "if this liquid turns pink it's a positive" testing kits are hyper-sensitive foe detecting drugs (as they should be), we dont ever see if the confiscated "loot" was pure cocaine and reasonably close in value to what's published, or if the bust was orchestrated on a big load that was 5% coke and 95% flour....clearly a small fraction in worth.
....while the container ships with thousands of kilos packed with pure cocaine just cruise right into port.

Test kits aren't sensitive and are extremely accurate.

I love how they say everyone pretty much already knew they were doing it then they say “it’s a game changer” like it’s shocking new information

Seeing pictures of that sub and then imagining being inside while crossing The Atlantic? fricking nightmare fuel right there.

Yeah I’d think these little crafts are decoys to draw attention away from the bigger shipments delivered via more reliable means.
Hell ole Juan could just as easily pay the Rooskies to carry coke to Europe in a real sub.

Does the article say what the top speed of that death trap is? I’m trying to figure how long their journey was. Gotta say, considering the cargo, could be a fun couple days in that death trap
I can see the job posting now.
Three Day Two Night All-You-Can-Snort Trans Atlantic Cruise to Spain!
Then in small print: Bring your own drinking water. Not for large men. Ship sails regardless of weather. Good luck.
