How do you know if an egg is bad?

I wanted to make egg salad for breakfast, but the expiration date on the eggs is July 16. Isn't there a test I could do?

are you being serious? crack the egg over your open mouth. if it taste nasty then it is no good, if not then proceed with new eggs or just spit it out and reuse it. women...

Submerge it in water. I'm not sure of the exact reasoning, but I know it has something to do with the air pocket in an egg.
Fresh eggs will sink to the bottom.
Slightly old eggs will sink, but bob at the bottom.
A few weeks old will cause the egg to flip upside down and have the large end pointing toward the surface.
A bad egg will float.

Anyone know the shelf life of an egg from hatching to it turning bad?

If it hatches it's no longer an egg but a chick.

When I buy a carton of eggs, I generally have 3 weeks to use them.

Those eggs are probably fine. I think the shells decay when they are rotten and you can hold them up to a light and kind of see inside.
Make some toast and buy some eggs.

Eggs last way past the expiration date on the carton. What are you going to do with them? If you cook them through and through they should be fine.

Unless it smells rotten when you crack it, it's good.

If you crack it open and you get a "cock a doodle doo!" then I would suspect it being a little ripe.
