Why did players come back so out of shape

Don't say covid cause all schools have dealt with it.You have Thomas and Bradford O LINE.Had Shelvin and Farrell D LINE.Sounds like lack of self discipline and coaches keeping tabs on them and motivating them. I thought all these guys had hopes to make it to the NFL,that isn't happening playing out of shape.

Glen Logan looks sloppy as hell too.

Again it starts and ends with O and the S&C coordinator and his staff. Linemen are always looking like they went thru a drive thru on the way to practice. If they don't comply to their weight requirements coming into camp, then they fall on the depth chart. They don't comply for the most part because there is no enforcement or they all don't comply.
Not buying the best oline nationally last year even though they were MUCH improved. JB made them look better than they were.

I agree 100%. I would like to move on from moffit to get new blood in there but I don’t trust O to make that hire. That is such a crucial hire because so much revolves around it. I like moffit but sometimes people just get to comfortable and stale.

Motivation and staying in shape has always been a problem for him

Two members of that o line are starting in the NFL as rookies. I get Burrow helped a lot but it was still an extremely good o line especially up the middle which for a quick passing game is very key.

So his message went from stale in 2018 to fresh to win a national championship In 2019 right back to stale for 2020. That is pretty amazing over the course of three season. LSU fans never cease amaze me.

It was speculated that Shelvin was out of shape when he opted out, but a week or two before the season started, a photo was posted of Shelvin in great shape.

Unfortunately I agree. I have not been impressed with a few of the guys. It can't be all on the coaches and can't be on all the players. A little of both. I think the leaders on the team are going to tighten up and understand it's not about them it's about the team and they might have to babysit some of their guys and show them the way and what it takes on and off the field.

Agree big time! D Lewis was a BEAST. He pancaked all year and I think he was a steal by Seattle in the 3rd round. The linemen potential is great at LSU but the motivation doesn't seem to be there at all levels. To me, this is one of the biggest issues at LSU every year.

I think it had to do with the unspoken "everybody get covid now so it is out of the way" strategy. For one, it meant that every player was out for 2 weeks, at randomly staggered intervals, effectively never allowing the team to have a "full" practice throughout the entire summer. In the off-season you expect to have a small percentage of the team get minor injuries and miss a little time, but since most stay healthy, the overall level of absenteeism doesn't impact the quality of practices. We've never had an off-season where over 50% (with some estimates closer to 80%) of the team out "injured" at one point or another.
Other teams had covid-19 outbreaks, but none of them had it tear through such a large swath of the team for so long.

Hard to keep kids focused. Especially after national championship. Anyway. The edge in the SEC is very thin. Have to do everything right and be at the top of your game every week. Clearly we have not had the leaders among the players and our coaches have not done enough to keep the edge.
2021 was always the year anyway. Replacing 17 to 19 starters was always going to be tough.

You are exposing yourself.
How many of those "overrated" O linemen made NFL rosters and are starting on NFL teams?
Maybe your should think before you hit that keyboard. e o

All teams have guys that aren't in shape.

Moffitt is definitely one of the best. Moving on from him is a hard NO from me. Accountability during the layoff would be my guess to the falloff, but it's not because Moffitt's S&C principals don't work.

Yeah, shelvin looked good in that photo for sure.

Saban had the same issue in 2004. Spears and Vincent both came in out of shape. Spears played his way into shape and finished well. Justin never regained his freshman form.
Complancency, sense of accomplishment or entitlement?
I wasn't aware that we were out of shape but I only saw the Moo U game and we just looked lost in the secondary.

You can't tell from a photo if somebody is in "good shape". They can have a perfect physique and be in very bad playing shape.
