Say he wins one more French open. Is he better than Federer all-time? He has the head to head but I can see an argument for so many of his titles being on clay.

If he wins one more than Roger, then he has the best argument for greatest of all-time. He still has that H2H advantage against Roger too (although Fed has shrunk down the difference).

I'm a huge fedtard, but it looks like he's going to get passed on the GOAT list in the next few years. I kind of hope Rafa hits 24, so there is no argument. If they all sit at 20-22, then it's take your pick. I think Rafa finishes at 22, then Roger and Novak at 20.

I think the floor is 21.

If he wins another French and picks off an Australian or another grand slam I don’t see how he isn’t known as the GOAT.

The media clearly backs Fed so it will be an uphill battle there but shite.

I still put the crown on Fed but I'm not going to argue with anyone who picks one of the other two.

For me, Fed was just slightly the more complete player. He didn't have any weaknesses. He could adjust his mental focus and style of play to excel under any circumstances, regardless of the surface, his opponent or his age/physical condition. The fact that he has a chance to win 400 Grand Slam matches (when 150 is probably the standard for greatness) is a testament to that.

The problem with Rafa is the public perception.

Federer has that more recognizable face, attitude, public perception, etc., compared to Nadal.

Nadal also has the extensive injury history.

If Nadal wins more than Federer, he has the argument for best of all time in numbers, but people will push back based solely on the more recognizable and popular characteristics of Federer, IMO.

IMO, if Nadal passes Federer, he takes the rank.

My statements are just regarding how the rest of the public will view him.

I say they end up:

Rafa -22
Fed - 21
Djok - 21

Rafa undisputed king of clay
Djokovic best returner
Fed best overall game

Splitting hairs to say who is best all time. Absolutely incredible that 3 different guys could amass 20 majors over roughly the same timeframe.

I would say Federer winning 5 consecutive at both the US Open and Wimbledon is pretty strong and having at least 5 of 3 different majors gives him the edge. But the other 2 still have time to build the resume while Roger's window is closing.

Definitely tGOAT on clay. There will always be an argument but I think it goes back to the all time wins. ALWAYS.

His legacy is that eventually he will be implicated in the Spanish doping system that has been going on the last 30 years...or 50 years...or longer.

The long history of Spanish tennis' doping

Rafa will have a sordid legacy like Barry Bonds.

I don't watch tennis, but I've checked in on this Fed/Rafa/Djokovic debate from time to time over the years. I frequently see this point brought up.

Can someone give me a quick version of why the surface matters so much, or, I suppose, how one player would be so dominant on one type of surface?

I'll hang up and listen
