People love to tell Georgia "not since 1980..."

But no one has been talking about the Oklahoma Sooners and how far away their last national championship is slowly becoming. The Sooners are one of the premiere programs in college football no doubt. A blue blood through and through. But they haven't won a national championship since the year 2000. There is no player in high school who was alive the last time they won it all and current Sooner players were in elementary school the last time they were even in a national championship game. Since the debut of the Coaches Poll in 1950, there hasn't been a national championship drought this wide for Boomer Sooner. The longest they went between titles before this was the 18 seasons between 1956 and 1974.
If Oklahoma doesn't start getting their act together soon, we might need to start questioning their "Blue Blood" credentials.

You can’t lose a blue blood credential or gain a blue blood credential
If that was the case, Miami and LSU would be blue bloods and Michigan wouldn’t be

I feel like this has been discussed more in recent years, at least among my friends.
It's crazy the current drought is longer than the one between Switzer and Stoops when you consider how bad the 90s were for them.

Where is that written?

If LSU maintains the level of consistency they have enjoyed since the turn of the century for another decade, and wins a couple national championships while they're at it, I think they will have earned a blue blood card. If Michigan continues to trend downward, they can easily lose it.

I mean their drought is still literally half of UGAs
And they’ve played for like 3-4 more titles in that stretch

Since the CFP started in 2015 they are 0-4. Three of those losses are to SEC teams. They aren't getting in this year either.

Georgia isn't and has never been a blue blood though. They've had some success over the years, but they've won exactly one major college football national championship since the Poll Era started in 1936. Oklahoma has them beat in that time in just about every major metric you can think of. Which is why it's so jarring that it's been 20 years since Oklahoma last lifted the crystal football. Same thing for programs like Notre Dame and Nebraska. And up until recently, ESPN had Oklahoma ranked as the #1 greatest college football program of all-time.

because most message board posters are young or stupid. It's what's seen as "cool" kind of like Y U Mad tho? was for a while back in teh days or calling people Karen is now. People just do it for no reason because they think they're supposed to with no actual thoguth behind it.
True, it is awful we've gone taht long wtihout a title but it's not unprecedented for a top ~13ish program to go that logn of a stretch, and that's the caliber of program we are. LSU went from 1958-2003. Ohio State went from 1968-2002. Texas went from 1970-2005. Michigan went from 1948-1997 (let that one sink in..since 1950 UGA and michigan both have 1 title). All of those schools are considered much more elite than we are except LSU, which we have generally been on an even footing with historically until the last decade. AU also went 50 years between their 2.
You want to know what's TRULY embarassing that people somehow ignore becuase "hurr durr muh 1980"? Tennessee going 20+ years without an SEC title. A national title is clearly the most difficult achievement in teh sport as you're competing with the entire country, and has been made even more difficult lately by having to win 2 games in 2 weeks aginast top 4 teams. The SEC, on the other hand, you are only competing with the 5-6 other teams in your division for a shot then have a 50/50 chance in a one-game scenario. Tennessee, despite being the 2nd best program in SEC history historically, hasn't won the league since 1998 and shows absolutely zero sign of ending that any time soon. What's more they haven't even played for a shot at it in 13 years, even south carolina has won the east more recently.

LSU was on the cusp of being a blueblood prior winning their last title according to ESPN.
Have the tigers overtaken the cornhuskers in the past 4 years?

and they're considered a blue blood top 5 program in cfb history. We are not, and are a top ~13ish program historically. We aren't expected to win a title every decade.

Oklahoma has had three teams good enough to win the title since 2000. Their 2004 team was fantastic, but they had an all time epic meltdown in the national title game.
Their 2008 team was fantastic, but that was the one Big 12 team that was truly hurt by the layoff between conference championship weekend and BCSCG. They beat Florida by 2 TDs if that game is played a week after CCG weekend.
Their 2017 team was fantastic and lost one of the best games in the history of the sport in the semifinal.

It is amazing to me that more time has now passed since their 2000 title than between 1985 and 2000. I grew up in the 90s and only knew Oklahoma for being a below average program in the Big 8/12. So when Stoops got rolling, the mid 80s Oklahoma teams were often referenced. And he we sit 20 years removed from that. Just crazy.

It’s hard to win a title, especially in places like OU, Nebraska, and ND that don’t have natural talent pools to draw from.
I think a program like Nebraska or Tennessee might be a better example of what you’re getting at. I do wonder how long they have to go before they’re like Minnesota or Syracuse, powers of a bygone era.

Yeah but they played for 3 from 2000-2004. That's pretty impressive.
And have only lost 2 games each year the last 5 years and have been in the playoffs 3 times.
It's not like they've been Nebraska.

Yea that’s why I don’t think Oklahoma is the best example of what the point of the thread is.
Oklahoma has still been very nationally relevant since 2000

I don’t think Tennessee is in danger of being Minnesota. They are just too close to talent hot beds and the state of Tennessee has some great talent as well. It just takes the right coach. Time will tell if that’s Pruitt.
Nebraska, however, is in trouble. Tom Osborne may have played the biggest role in their downward spiral, pushing for the move to the Big 10. They had enough going against them with partial qualification and roster size reduction. The cost of a college education these days gutted their walk-on program as well. Then you have the rise of smaller, regional FCS programs that can pick off potential Nebraska walk-ons too. And they no longer have a massive advantage in strength and conditioning they once held.

Nashville's population explosion will help them too
