Trump bought MOL in 1985 as a private residence. From the Post Trust as it was private residence for the Post Cereal Heiress.

After several huge financial failures including the Taj Mahal and Plaza Hotel bankruptcies, Trump was forced to restructure his corporate holdings cause he was broke and in debt.

First he tried to subdivide and sell MOL into smaller properties, but his plan was rejected by Palm Beach county. So he opened it as a private club in 1995 and used the influx of cash to pay debts. It was never a club before Trump, so its not like he changed any tradition of segregation. He just allowed anyone with $100,000 to join, like most places.

It would be like if you lost your job and had to AirBnB out your house to pay the mounting mortgage. Then calling yourself the next MLK cause you didn't turn away renters when you found out they were wealthy blacks.

You left out the most important part from the fact check you tried to pass off as your own thoughts:

quote:

As a business move, Trump did allow Jews and African Americans to take membership in the club, making it different from most private clubs in Palm Beach. Trump accepted African Americans and Jews at a time when most private clubs in Palm Beach, Fla., were not open to them. According to the Washington Post, Trump's club was the first to accept African Americans and openly gay couples. But it was a business move, not a crusade. Laurence Leamer wrote in his book, 'Mar-a-Lago: Inside the Gates of Power at Donald Trump's Presidential Palace,' that Trump's lawyer Paul Rampell persuaded Trump of the business value of a wider membership by arguing that Palm Beach had many Jewish residents, but they had no real club of their own.

Tells me Trump was trying to create affordable housing for less wealthy blacks and the racist politicians of Palm Beach County rejected black people owning a piece of Mara Lago.
