I blew my ankle out 3 times during since high school. I decided to start running and di those curb lift ups pre run. Gotta say, they gave me confidence and it worked.
Good luck with no surgery.

Contrary to popular OT belief, fat isn't always the issue.

Had the worse of my two bad ankles repaired about 10 yrs ago. Used to average turning each one once or twice a year to the point of needing crutches for a couple days
For the surgery Dr went in and folded the stretched ligaments in on themselves and then sewed them up to take out the slack.

Did great until I turned the piss out of it when I stepped in a hole where a pine had rotted out while dragging a deer out of the woods.

Since then it tries to turn every now and then but usually not to the point of a full on sprain.

Worst thing is the occasional ghost itch that you can scratch forever and never get to stop until it decides to. But other than that I would highly recommend the op

Used to have some ankle issues. I went zero drop, minimal shoes 100%, and haven't had an issue since.

Is that a real medical issue?

Have you ever visited with a movement specialist?

I’ve never heard of this but I have bad ankles, broke 3 times. My last Ortho said went on amd on about the bone chips and arthritis in it. They removed the bone chips so that’s good, but their both still very unstable. If I step anywhere near a hole, it’s likely to swell up and maybe turn colors.

That’s said, I’ve never heard of ‘chronic ankle instability’. He never suggested anything to make it more stable but I do have plates and 8 screws in it right now but there not scheduled to ever come out.

I have a rod, a plate an 10 screws in my ankle, and it's really unstable. I wonder if corrective surgery would even be possible with all the hardware I have in there.
I'm probably resigned to wearing a brace from here on out.

I have a brace that I wear when I go on rocky terrain, which isn’t very often. But man, I can just be standing there with all my weight on one leg and it’ll just give out sometimes and I stumble to the side like I got shot. It really sucks.

I swear I could sprain my ankle by just standing there and turning my head too fast. It’s quite pathetic.

No, but I perform them routinely. Usually the surgery involves reconstruction of either 1 or 2 ligaments (anterior talofobular and/or calcaneal fibula) using a synthetic suture or cadaver graft.

I typically keep patients non weight bearing for 4-6 weeks afterwards, and then they begin relatively aggressive PT.

Eta: it obviously varies for each patient but I usually tell people it will be between 4-6 months to get back to "normal." People do very well long term.
