3rd down defense

Somebody posted these 3rd down notes on the 247 site and just wow!!!
- On MSU's 2nd drive of game, they had 3rd and 13 on our 44 yard line after a holding penalty and we gave up a 25 yard pass to Mitchell which Flott got beat on (really excellent pass though), they went on to get a FG that drive when we probably should have shut them out
- On MSU's 3rd drive of game, they had 3rd and 10 from their own 14 and Moore jumped offsides to make it 3rd and 5, luckily they only got a 3 yard gain on 3rd/5 and then punted, but that made an easy situation a lot more difficult.
- On MSU's 1st drive of 2nd quarter they had 3rd and freaking 20 on their own 33 yard line after a grounding call, we give up a 24 yard pass with Evans in coverage. Lucky for us later in drive Cole Smith snaps the ball early and it's a fumble recovered by us.
- On a 3rd and 10 at MSU's own 9 yard line in 2nd quarter Costello throws a pick 6 to Cox, one of the few defensive wins on 3rd and long on the day.
- On a 3rd and 10 at our 31 yard line mid-way through 2nd quarter Costello throws to a wide open Shavers over Evans busted coverage for a TD, horrible play.
- On a 3rd and 11 at out 43 yard line late in 2nd quarter MSU throws a pass complete to Mitchell for 43 yards for a TD, Ricks was in coverage, got rubbed by a MSU receiver to throw him JUST enough off to not be able to get a hand on the ball which was honestly perfectly placed. BRUTAL.
- Onto 3rd quarter MSU's first drive they had 3rd and 10 from our 39 yard line, great opportunity to get them off the field with no points, Costello hits Payton on a crossing route with Ward way behind for a 34 yard gain, MSU goes on to get a FG there.
- Late in 4th quarter, we're only down by 3 and MSU has 3rd and 9 at our 24 yard line, great opportunity to force a mid range FG, but Ward gets beat by Mitchell on a simple go route with Ward a bit behind in tow, perfect throw for TD, pretty much game over as now we're down by 10 instead of 3 or 6 with under 4 minutes to go and only 1 TO.
The 3rd and long play by the defense was abysmal. I might add almost ALL of those completions on 3rd and long came on what looked to be man 1 on 1 coverage I am seeing , very little deep zone played on any of them if we did.
We gave up SIX 3rd and longs this game, SIX. That's truly bad.
Just can’t help but to think atleast some stops on 3rd down could’ve possibly changed the game with adjustments

It’s because we were playing man coverage with our 3rd-8th best corners entering to to the season against the fricking air raid

Agreed. Defense was by far way worse than our offense. Looking at the stat line, pretty much all things were same in terms of number of plays, time of possession, ect. Biggest difference was yards.

I did not break it down, but it felt like 3rd and long was cake for MooState all day. Thanks for posting the actual play lines...it was even worse than it felt.

When he was hired, many expressed concern that he couldn't stop modern spread offenses in the SEC.
Stubborness, ego and refusal to adapt/make adjustments is what gets coaches fired. BP will either fix it or he'll only be here one season.
If he doesn't get it done, Will Muschamp will be the next DC at LSU after he gets canned at USC-E......

3rd and Chavis, 3rd and Aranda, and now, the worst of them all, 3rd and Pelini.

These are the actual reasons why they lost the game. I think they gave up either 3 or 4 touchdowns on 3rd and long

That was my post on 247
They ended up scoring 27 points on those 3rd and long conversion drives they had.
Absolutely nuts, ridiculously poor defense and defensive game plan. To not play any zone was just absolutely stupid. Washington made a living in zone rushing just 3-4 players in long down situations against Leach at Wazzu and embarrassed him year after year. Leach's QBs threw for 12 INT to 3 TD in the last 5 years of Wazzu vs. UW games.

LSU did not play defense on 3rd down.

Game def had a 3rd and Chavis feel to it!
It went from 3rd and long, maybe we'll get the stop we need.....to 3rd and long, lets see how we blow this one.

In other words, the one adjustment they could have made early on is go to a sticks defense on 3rd and longs are just not try to press man in that situation. Back off so they can see what's developing underneath.
