You are probably thinking of quartzite. Quartzite is a natural stone similar to granite. Quartz is a man made “slab” that is made with crushed pieces of quartz and resin that is poured into a mold and looks nothing like a natural stone with “movement”.

That's not really the case any more. It's still produced that way, but it's hard to tell some of these from natural granite. All of those solid color designs are still available, but now you can find patterns you once found only with natural stone.
Take a look at a maker like Cambria; this stuff is beautiful and almost worry free.
