I know the genre of modern RTS games (in the spirit of Command & Conquer and such) has died out a bit, but I wanted to see if the board had any good RTS recommendations.

Red Alert 2 is probably one of my favorite RTS games of all time and is still one of my go-to games when I'm traveling. So, I'm looking for a similar, accessible RTS that might fit that mold.

Any other recommendations are welcome, too.

TIA

Halo Wars was pretty cool but I don’t know if people still play it or not

Are you talking about RTS made recently or RTS that take place in the modern world?

AOE II has the new definitive edition and they are coming out with AOE III DE also. But I'm thinking maybe that's not what you meant.

The only others I can think of is Company of Heroes (WWII) and Star Craft 2

RTS made recently. I’ve picked up the C&C remaster, a game which I loved as a kid, but the new coat of paint doesn’t cover the glaring gameplay flaws that I never noticed when I was younger. So, I haven’t played much of it.

Admittedly, I missed the WarCraft/StarCraft train. Is there still a pretty active community in StarCraft 2? The only thing I know about it is that I will probably get mulched by a Korean 12-year-old

Why was that one so bad? I had high hopes

It's that reason I avoid online multiplayer unless it's co-op

The single player campaigns are great

overpromised and under delivered, amongst other reasons. the core game is great, the added graphics and cinematics were a major let down and they also removed long time players' records and icons when launching remasters etc which pissed people off. merged old Warcraft 3 into reforged so there technically isn't an old Warcraft 3 client you can play online on. (my understanding at least)

I think Starcraft 2 is nearly dead at this point

Never played Dawn of War. That’s set in the Warhammer 40k universe, right? My college roommate played the table-top game, so I guess I always linked them together. Might check that out along with Company of Heroes.

Yeh 40k. I liked it. C&C/Warcraft 2 are my favorites.

I used to watch friends play it back in the day, but never delved into it myself. Always looked like a blast, but by the time I got seriously into gaming a couple of years later, most of my buddies had moved on to Halo/CoD. Loved watching all the MOBA predecessors and “Helms Deep” base defense games online, though. Never saw much of the campaign.

Is the remaster worth checking out? I heard mixed reviews, including in this thread, but it seems like most of the criticisms are from those who played the original before. So, maybe my ignorance would spare me.

it's the same exact game, there's an option to turn on the reforged or classic graphics. all of those custom games are still available as well.

it is absolutely worth checking out if you've never played. so much content for $30

Honestly, Age of Empires II Definitive edition has been a lot of fun and there are plenty of players online.

It's really revitalized that game's community.

Definitive edition for AoE III is coming out next month and I expect it to have the same effect.
