So, is Johnny Lawrence the bad guy in Cobra Kai or no?

It was pretty apparent that after Johnny lost to Daniel in The Karate Kid, Johnny had respect for Daniel. He handed him the trophy after all.
However, for Johnny, you can tell the loss affected his life. He’s trying to make up for it by rebuilding the Cobra Kai brand (kinda).
Yeah, he can be a dick at times, and his view of the altercations he had with Daniel in the past are skewed, but is he essentially the bad guy in this series?
I’ve only watched the first season. Waiting for the wife to finish it before moving on to season 2.

I’m on episode 8 of season 1. I don’t see a clear bad guy. I think they both have their point of view of what happened and it impacts them differently

I only saw the first three episodes when they first came out for free on YouTube. LaRusso came across a bit of a douche weasel. Does he redeem himself as the series goes on? Now that it is on Netflix I may have to give it a go.

No he is not the bad guy. Cobra Kai(The Series) is the redemption story of Johnny Lawrence. Season 2 wasn't as good as season 1 due to the story lines it uses, but the last 2 episodes are amazing.

Daniel is definitely a big ole douche in season 1. They are equal douche in season 2.

Honestly that never made sense to me. You kinda get that he had some respect when he didn't want to sweep the leg but he was not remorseful about doing it. Also, Johnny elbowed his knee all on his own like 30 seconds before he's handing him the trophy. If he had respect for him he probably wouldn't have done the elbow. Felt like handing him the trophy that was tacked on to redeem the villains more than making sense character-wise.

Daniel is just the classic nerdy kid success story who is overcompensating for his insecurities.
Im only part way through the first season but I actually thought the characters were really well written and nuanced.
He’s a terrible dad, a drunk driver and a loser, but he’s not a monster.
Daniel is a good guy but not a saint either.

He's the good guy, but Daniel is not the bad guy, imo. They're just 2 guys with pros and cons who are in conflict with each other.
At first, I thought it was stupid that Johnny's whole life was poisoned by that one event, but now I think it had a lot more to do with his marriage to a party whore. The fight was just the spark that led to Johnny's life of bad choices.

Daniel is the bad guy always and forever.

That's one reason I like this show. It flips, depending on the moment. I think Johnny is still the "bad guy", but Daniel is a d-bag, at times. Daniel's life worked out and you can tell he thinks he's hot shite. At least Johnny is trying to make something of himself.

This is what makes the show so great. It’s real.
They are both trying to do the best they can but get in their own way and also can’t see things from the other guy’s perspective, although they get glimpses.
It really is a fantastic storyline to follow.

To be determined.
The good thing is there are still a lot of ways they can take this storyline with Netflix involved.
Hopefully Netflix doesn't screw it up.
With the rumors of Chozen and Ali coming back as well it will be a lot more storylines to flush out.
My guess is season 3 will have Daniel return to Okinawa to reconnect with where Miyagi is from to help him sort through some things especially the way season 2 ended. Ali probably returns and reconnects with Lawrence and then Daniel will return from Okinawa and sparks will fly again since Daniel will not be on good terms with his current wife.

I think Ali's douchebag boyfriend will have a large role. They set him up to look like the ultimate Mr. Wonderful douche, so they are definitely going somewhere with it.

Everytime I try to watch this show something just feels off about it. Cant put my finger on it but at the same time it's too distracting to keep watching.

Johnny has never been the bad guy.
Posted on 8/31/20 at 4:42 pm to finchmeister08
No
He's just bad at making the right decisions. Had miyagi been in his life, instead of John..he probably would have turned out better.
I wouldn't like daniel either if I were him. Or anyone else

He tries so hard to do the right thing, but he’s damaged, impulsive, and lacks that sage guidance from a father figure that Mr. Miyagi gave to Daniel.
He never learned to control his rage because Cobra Kai taught him only to use it as a weapon. Yet, he is always willing to jump on the grenade and sacrifice his own well-being for those he cares about.
He and Daniel are both tragic figures. Their rivalry one born of external factors pushing them to confrontation fueled by their own insecurities and preconceived notions. In another life, they’d be best friends, but here, they are destined to always be in conflict. Neither ever truly in the right or in the wrong. Both virtuous but flawed. Both trying to be good parents and father figures and businessmen. Just two boys who never really outgrew the petty sports rivalry of their youth.

I think he was, but i think he was more concerned with what would come of not following those orders. He was visibly upset when he was told that when 1 on 1 with Kreese..but in front of everyone he had to do what he had to do.
Even Bobby, who was confident and probably could have beat him, was forced to disqualify himself out of fear from Kreese as he said, "Daniel!, I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I didn't mean it! I'm sorry!"

But Bobby had showed he wasn't as into beating the hell of Daniel before. When they beat him up at the Halloween party Bobby was the one saying he's had enough.

That was just some bullying, or correcting I guess..as opposed a legit tournament which could have advanced him. Especially since he took martial arts seriously.
TBH I could have seen him trying to join "Miyagi's dojo" after the parking lot incident.
