Got an email from United saying they are doing away with change fees

Says it’s permanent. That’s a good step in the right direction. Curious to see if others follow their lead

Yep. Was happy to see that myself.

Yeah, but they don't give you a refund or credit if you switch to a cheaper flight. So, this still isn't as good as what Southwest does.
Still, it's a good thing.

Corona is forcing airlines to be more consumer friendly.
Finally something positive

Saw somewhere this morning they made $625 million in 2019 from change fees...so there's no way IMO they can just lose that revenue right now. I'm not sure how they plan to make it up.

I bet most of the $625 million was from corporate travel accounts paying change fees. With fewer business travelers now, that revenue stream has likely already been gone since march. It's a good move that will give them some positive PR and is consumer friendly in the short term, I do agree they will probably come back in the future but not at $250/ticket

I wonder if this is short-term or going to be permanent? Some analysts are projecting zoom and Microsoft teams to take over meetings when people would have traveled for face to face meetings. Less business travel is also going to hurt hotel chains.

I rebooked my flight (exact same flight) b/c there was a price drop. Few weeks later, United cancelled the flight. They wouldn't refund my money, just gave me another travel voucher even though they cancelled the flight. I'm done w/ them.

I've been saying for years that 90% of my meetings could be a phone call or a webcam/etc. Finally all my clients are forced into it and OMG we all survived and I can give the same service with a zoom meeting vs physically being there. I have zero business travel and flights planned for the remainder of the year, and likely half of 2021.

Tough to beat in person meetings if you’re in sales and marketing though

Yep. I agree there’s plenty that can be transitioned to online meetings, but anyone that acts like 100% can be is being ignorant. In house meetings especially are easier, but if I’m paying a consultant well then I’d like them in person.
Also, people act like 3rd party rates should stay the same. If you normally pay a vendor or 3rd party to meet you multiple times a year that includes a flight and hotel I’m sure as hell not paying you the same to call me from your house.

With my usual clients, I’m just sticking with zoom. However, for new clients, I’ve still been traveling to go meet them/pitch etc
Once this is over, I’ll be traveling about 25% of what I did in 2019. Possibly less.
And with Centurion lounges closed, Delta not serving hot food, and less amenities at the airport or on the plane; I have less excitement about traveling
