I've designed residential and commercial property. Built residential. Done plumbing, electrical and HVAC loads ...But I'm finally perplexed.

1950's construction. Bathroom. Toilet flushes then spends about 3 hours at a drip rate to fill the tank. This is what makes it odd. If I flush the toilet, then turn on the tub or sink water ...the water feed to toilet tank operates exactly as it is designed, fills the tank within seconds. My initial thought was a clogged water feed, util I turned on the tub water and heard the toilet tank feed. Then removed the lid and watched the refil. Flushed again ...drip, drip then turned on the tub ...rapid fill. Thought this can not be a clog ...flushed again, then turned on the faucet at the sink ...rapid fill in the toilet tank ....Makes no sense .....

Use to do plumbing as well.

That is really odd.
I mean the only damn thing I can even come up with is maybe too high of water pressure causing the fill valve to somehow get to fully open then continue past that and back partially open?

I dunno, that is pretty weird. It just seems by opening other water sources probably on the same branch you are lowering the pressure and it works fine. Maybe try a new fill valve setup....

It almost sounds like a leak and when the tub is opened gives enough pressure.

What's the water pressure at the house?

First thing I’d do is figure out if it’s the toilet or before the toilet. I know you know this, but get a bucket and turn your water off and disconnect your supply to your toilet. Then have someone else turn your water on. See if you have normal water pressure to your toilet. I would try both with other faucets open also either way. If normal to your toilet, obviously it’s something in your toilet.

The guess about is good about potentially the over pressure causing an issue with the fill.

My other thought is maybe there’s a check valve or split in your lines or something that is partially closed and when you have extra flow it cause better flow.

extra pressure?

That's a thought. Could you possibly have some debris in the fill tube that's pushed up to the top when fully pressurized, and then when not under as much pressure drops back down. Something going up and down in the fill tube?

eta: you ever taken top off valve on fill tube and cleaned out debris before... I've had to after shocking the lines when turning water main back on.... maybe the inverse with stuff under the little check valve... something that was too large to end up on the usual top side

Is the toilet appropriately vented? Could the vent be tied to the other fixtures, and there is a vacuum when the others are closed?

A vent on the pressure side? He said it flushes fine.

Fill valve. The swing in pressure in the water system somehow affects it. Try replacing the innards first before moving on to something more costly..

I'll be going to Lowe's to by a new kit. It's fun to flush the toilet, walk to the tub and turn on the cold water faucet for five seconds. But I don't need that kind of entertainment for long.

Hot water will not start it .... cold water which makes sense. I was wrong on the sink. Nothing starts it up from the sink. Different part of the waterline. Up or down stream.
