Middle aged males on antidepressants?

I realize this is the OT, but I wanted to ask for feedback on any middle aged males that have used/and or using an antidepressant.
I’ve seen threads in the past and many of the responses are weed or CBD related, both didn’t work for me.
I just turned 40 and have a great life with two kids. I’ve always been the anxious type that can’t sit still but ever sense I was in a bad car wreck 5 years ago, I’ve developed some bad pain in my shoulder that I haven’t been able to get rid of.
I’ve ready many of books on ptsd and pain and I believe my brain thinks danger is near anytime I have pain or feel sore. When that happens my body tenses up and I have a panic attack. I hate this feeling so much and over the past year I just don’t get excited for anything or care about anything.
I talk to a physiatrist and have been doing yoga and meditation. I work out daily and am in very good physical health
I’m now open to taking meds because I feel like I’ve hit a wall with getting better. It scares me to death because of the reviews and side effects.
My doctor said the 3 most tolerated are Prozac, lexapro and Zoloft. My biggest fears are insominia, weight gain and lack of sex drive.
For every 10 reviews of SSRIs saving peoples lives I read another 10 saying whatever you do don’t take them. I just hate the feeling of giving in to meds.
Any help or encouragement is appreciated.

Get a convertible corvette and start banging 22 year old Instagram models.

5mg of Lexapro. No side effects for me. Does just enough for me. Also an anxious type. Tried Wellbutrin and it didn't work for me. Drive still there. Best of luck my friend. I also work out tirelessly. Listen to sermons. Nice mix. 39.

I take cymbalta. Before that it was welbutrin. I feel like they did their job. I want to kick them but I am afraid the depression will come back.

No zombie feeling or weight gain? How long before you noticed a difference?

I’m a psychiatrist working in private practice here’s my input. First, never accept and take mental health medication from your GP. Many will write them but in my experience they often don’t have a full scope on which medication, dose and titration, and when to expect to see results. Second, SSRIs and SNRIs are very hit or miss medications. We often don’t expect to see results for 4-6 weeks and you’ll likely have to try more than one. You can also expect symptoms to get worse before they get better because with these medications dose has to be raised quickly to reach therapeutic levels for this kind of thing,
If someone has anxiety with depression I often try Mirtazipine first, it’s taken at night and helps with sleep but can cause weight gain.

Not really an antidepressant but Buspirone has been a difference maker for me. Takes a week or 2 to fully work and get in your system. I’ve had 0 side effects other than the first week some concentration issues while reading. That has improved though

Good feedback. As a doctor do you have a preference with one? Someone like me scared to death of insomnia, weight gain and sex drive?

I edited my post with the one I use most

It’s basically throwing darts at a dartboard when it comes to seeing which of those work once the issues have been identified. You might have to go through several meds to find the one that works. Just a heads up

Based on watching a friend and a family memeber’s experiences, I wouldn’t take an SSRI until I had exhausted every other option.
Try therapy, diet, exercise, literally anything else first.

They help. It takes the edge off. You still have to do it.
Just. Keep. Moving. That’s the most important thing.

What kind of exercise do you do?

This is also good advice. Lifestyle changes can go a long way. There’s little harm in trying SSRIs or SNRIs though. It’s no addicting in any way an can be stopped. Most psychs, myself included, will give a benzo to help bridge symptom while you acclimate. Those are what you need to make sure you don’t overuse.

Look into Trintellix. Newer drug that seems to do better with side effects and withdrawal.
