We only use it 5-10 days a year when it gets hot. Recently, I have noticed that it is taking a longer to cool down the house. Repair guy came, checked it out and said most likely the “thermal expansion valve” is failing. Cost to replace $600-$700.
Obviously I know nothing about air conditioning.
Does that sound right?

Thanks for everyone who told me to check if it was still under warranty (wasn’t sure since I purchased the house 2 years ago) It still is, for parts at least.

He did a bunch of diagnostic. At first he said nothing wrong with you AC. He kept the machine connected for a while then he started noticing some kind of pressure/reading that kept a fluctuating. He said it shouldn’t fluctuate like that and is most likely that thing that I mentioned.

I'm trying to imagine only 5-10 days when it gets hot.

If you only use it 5-10 days a year I definitely wouldn’t spend money on it right before fall.

Seems high, but maybe parts for your brand are very expensive.

Right. He could invest that money in something practical like an Ambulance Plan

Could be right for your area I guess .....although I think around here I'd probably pay 300-500 for that....you could always call a couple other AC places and see what they say.

Evacuate the freon from the system, replace thermal expansion valve, replace filter/dryer, vacuum pump the system and make sure it holds pressure, recharge system with freon. Is it an older R-22 freon HVAC?

It's not just a change out the part repair so $600-700 doesn't sound crazy high.

Bad expansion valve most likely. The price is wacked though. I would have charged half that in north Alabama.

You're more likely to get an informed answer (and fewer OT smartass remarks) on the Home & Garden Board.

We feel you down here - only run the heater 5-10 days a year
