Running a timed mile 3x per week

What would be the overall impact on one's health? The pace would be a decent 8:30 or 9:00 clip, pushing yourself to beat your time each attempt.
What's better, that, or barely putting along for 30 minutes 3x a week?

That’s low miles and shouldn’t be an issue.

It's always good to mix in shorter, faster runs with longer, slower runs. I would do 2 times 1 mile with about a 3-5 minute rest between each once week. After 3 weeks of that try to add a third mile. After a few weeks of that go back to 2 times 1 mile but run them 15 seconds faster. Do the same buildup to 3 reapeats and maybe then add a 4th mile repeat. And so on....

I don’t see an issue with it. I don’t think you really need to run more than that unless you’re in the military or want to run marathons.

Wendler recommends running a mile a few times a week. As far as pace, he says something along the lines of "run like a house is on fire, but someone you don't really like is inside."

If your goal is just to improve your general health, then 30 minutes 3 X per week would be much more beneficial. 27 minutes a week, especially if broken up into three 9-minute segments, isn't enough of a stimulus to make much of a difference unless you are morbidly obese. You would be better off walking or doing walk/run intervals for 30 minutes until you can run the entire time.

What are your goals?
You could make this a nice training session depending on your goals. Walk 10min, run a timed mile, walk another 10min.

This answers Patrick's question too...basically improve general health. Healthy heart, feel more energetic during the workday, maintain current weight.

That's kind of what I've been doing. Walk 10 min to get a little blood flowing, then start the kickass music and try to get down close to an 8:30 mile. In this heat it's been hard to get much under 8:50. Then I walk about 10 min to cool off.

1 mile run. About another mile of walking (half before, half after)
