I just had to pay the DMV for an insurance lapse that a dead woman had after she fricking died to get a car registered properly. frick DEM. We went round and round with supervisors and such before letting them swipe the card. Of course there was a fee to pay and no option of paying with cash.

Don't they legally have to take cash. Isn't it printed right there on the bills?

Not everyone can just hook to their house and move it to a different location

The DMV is in the top 5 of most corrupt government institutions in the state.

That’s a common misconception. There are no federal statutes that mandate a business or person accept cash or coins as payment for goods or services.

But this isn't a business or person. It's a government office. Unless it was one of those Express OMV that are actually a private business.

You can't remove a "flag" in person or online, only over the phone.
For the rest about dead/died etc. If the insurance lapse was before she died I could accept that, this is after she is dead and they enforced the penalty for a time frame from when the insurance was canceled after her death until we removed the flag.

Did you buy the car from her estate or something?

Translation: "Sure, we do a lot of things arse-backwards and it makes no sense, but we're never going to actually try and be better so if you don't like it then you can just leave for a place that actually has it's shite together."

I was wondering this too. Or did you inherit it by chance?
This is BS but I could see how they are in the right if you inherited and didn't have the car insured

We can’t all move to Boston and rob banks or become genius janitors

Had same situation happen after a move out of state and then back. Insurance didn't actually lapse, they just needed proof. I brought my insurance cards from the entire period in question. They said that wasn't good enough and I needed an official letter from the insurance company with their letterhead ie the insurance cards are good enough for the police but not the DMV. No one mentioned this in my THREE visits there. I just paid the fine instead of sitting in that hellhole again, even though my insurance had never lapsed.

I have been fighting with DMV over a "lapse," and they are stupid AF. When my daughter (no pics) moved to LSU, I changed her policy to try to save some money. Figured out almost immediately that the change would not work so changed it back to the regular coverage. I got a notice that I owed almost $700.00 for a "lapse" in coverage. Been at this for over a year, with letters from my insurance company confirming there was never any lapse yet they still will not remove the fine. I will never pay those frickers anything.

Doesn't matter, legal tender only applies to debts, not privileges.
