Why do these Johnny Six Pack's love being called "captain" so much? Ships have captains; fishing boats just have some dude driving it.

the pilot or person in charge of a vessel underway is referred to as captain as a matter of course and courtesy in maritime tradition. Typically this only comes up in an official radio transmission or in a written account of an incident

It is ridiculously easy to obtain...part of the process involves a log of boat operating time LOL....and boat, under any kind of condition, and the only data to support the log is the data that the applicant puts in the log...there is no required supporting documentation.
