Lincoln was a flawed man (who isn't?) but DiLorenzo is incredibly dishonest. Keep in mind that he's an economist, not a historian: my thesis would've been rejected if it looked like one of his works

The southern states were not going to peacefully end slavery. Their entire economic system , and financially freedom, depending upon it. Look at the richest states and cities pre civil war and post civil war. The great wealth acquired in the south occurred on the backs of a free labor market.

This never seems to be a problem when it's the Left. Noam Chomsky is a linguist, but when he speaks, the Nation and New Republic crowds lick up every word as if it's holy gospel, no matter the subject. All the networks calling him a "public intellectual" never go "OK, but what does a linguist know about *insert subject here*".
