He has posted a good amount of LSU stuff on Twitter and I do think there's a chance.
If I had to guess, I would lean towards your line of thinking. He likely goes to Nebraska solely because of the depth chart differences.
I'd love to get him, he's one of my favorite recruits in this class. Reminds me of a Zach Ertz clone.

After this season you’ll only have Gilbert, Kole Taylor and Storz as real TE options on the entire roster. For a guy as talented as Fidone, he could earn playing time as a true Frosh. I say this without knowing anything about Nebraska’s TE depth though. LSU has to sell him on playing in the better conference, actually competing for championships and paring him with Gilbert and a ridiculously talented WR room.
