It never was. They tried to conflate it into something else by paying an actor to shoot up a pizza joint owned by a pedophile. The shooter even has an IMDB page.

It was "debunked" because the narrative dictated that it be dismissed out of hand before more people began asking questions of the predilections of their elected officials and entertainers.

Unless, of course, there's a logical explanation for $65k worth of hotdogs at an Obama-hosted party, or Podesta email content:

That is exactly why the CIA contrived the term "conspiracy theorist" and utilized project mockingbird to brainwash the public with it.

It became a highly successful tool over many decades to the point the news could literally call anyone a conspiracy theorist and then the public would immediately dismiss anything that person ever said again without taking the time to listen to the facts.

The term became so overused over the last 5-10 years that the public has become essentially immune to the tool. This has almost directly led the "awakening" by the public over the last few years. Many many people now fully recognize there is such a thing as a cabal. There is such a thing as crony capitalism. There is such a thing as area 51. There is such a thing as a B2 bomber and SR71. There is such a thing as a deep state. Etc. etc.
