Was listening to a streaming station recently and one of their songs came on. I'm sure like most Led Zeppelin fans, you were like me and thought what is this song I have never heard from the band I've devoted so much time to :) And then you shazamed and thought wow, who the hell is this?
Anyway, I see they only have one album and a few EPs. Is it worth checking out? I mean I love Zeppelin so should I care if they sound very similar?

Yes, if you liked the song and like Zeppelin. They've had people say they're unoriginal because they sound too much like Zeppelin but I think they're good

There are only two possible opinions of Greta Van Fleet:
A. They sound like Led Zeppelin, the GOAT rock band, so they are good.
B. They sound like Led Zeppelin, the GOAT rock band, so they are bad.
Basically, people either love them or hate them for the same reason. They’re easily the most polarizing band on the internet. They are popular because they sound just like a classic band. They’re disliked because they sound too much like a classic band. It’s either a brilliant homage or a hackish copycat.

Oh boy.... this board hasn’t ripped on them in a while.
Basically, they’re a bunch of kids who do sound very very much like LZ and there’s absolutely no chance in hell they didn’t actively try to replicate their sound.
Having said that, they’re about the most exciting new band to come around in rock in about 10 years. Yes, we all have tried pumping king gizzard wizard blizzard, and arctic monkeys type shite but if we’re being honest; that shite all really sucks. GVF is actually something worth getting excited about, even if they are ripping from LZ. frick it. Better than the emo humming noises over pianos and acoustic 3 chords that most “alternative” rock bands are putting out. They actually have some testosterone in their riffs.

Their SNL performance solidified them in my mind as imposters.
ETA: it was laughably bad

So here's the situation. Rock fans bitch and complain that rock is dead. Rock band comes along that gives rock fans everything they've been waiting for in a rock band for the last 20 or so years. Rock fans deem the bands sound too similar to one of the greats. They give the band a bunch of shite and effectively consider them the new Nickelback. Most rock fans then sit with thier thumbs up their asses wondering why there are no new rock bands (hint: this might be one of the reasons). Another portion of the rock fans try to convince you that rock is alive and well, you just have to know where to look for it. The last and smallest portion of us are left trying to figure out why rock fan group 1 gives a bunch of shite to a rock band with solid sound in a musical climate that rock music is barely even present, and how rock fan group 2 has convinced themselves that the stuff that they found that they "knew where to look to find the good rock" is something more than obscure, out of tune, out of key, overly processed psuedo-rock (okay, so I'm generalizing a bit here). But honestly, most of that shite isn't good. If it was, I wouldn't have to look for it. I honestly believe that group 2 has simply settled for this stuff as quality rock...anyway, these are some the (but not limited to) reasons we don't have a solid rock scene now.

The only people who say this are people stuck in the past that want every band to sound exactly like the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin.

I’d rather they all sound like Zeppelin than The Lumineers, K-flay, Bastile, Imagine Dragons, and Tame Impala.
They say rock is dead because current rock n roll bands are completely absent from pop culture. They’re rarely heard in advertising, television shows, or movies. They’re not talked about in gossip rags. The stations that call themselves “rock” stations aren’t playing any music remotely resembling rock that wasn’t made at least 15 years ago!
If you have to “hunt” for it, it’s become a niche genre, and is functionally dead, at least in comparison to its former level of cultural relevance.

I was reading an article about top “alternative rock artists” currently out. They had fricking Billie Eillish listed. I closed the article and put my phone down in hopelessness

Sorry I want my rock to sound like rock baw, but I don't limit my definition of rock to the Rolling Stones or Led Zepplin. There's plenty of sound to explore within the realm of the genre. But if a band wants to draw major influence from a well liked sound that has no presence in today's music, in cool with that too.

That niche genre still brings in 50,000+ people to several multi day festivals around the country.

Don’t care for the yodeling.

And all of those festivals are anchored by acts that are over 15 years old. The current acts can barely manage to fill venues the size of The Varsity or The Fillmore.

If you want a new flavor of the month with no staying power go listen to pop or rap. Rock fans are loyal to the bands they like. That's why you see bands still being relevant 20+ years into their career. You almost never see that in rap and its rare in pop. The festival headliners may be older but the lower and mid cards have plenty of newer acts.
Posted on 6/20/20 at 7:28 pm to Brosef Stalin
The issue is the dearth of quality new acts as well as a lack of infrastructure supporting them. It’s almost like a memo went out in 2005 that said that if you’re not already a rock star that no new applications would be accepted.
In the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, current Rock acts had no problems filling arenas. Today, not so much without a washed up headliner.

Until their words become pronounced (and emoted) exactly like that other band. Maybe the singer by accident of birth precisely mimic's the original; however to me it sounds like he needs to go find his own voice. And if that's really his natural voice they need someone else so they have an original sound. Otherwise to my ear it just sounds like covers. . . albeit done well . . . (even if their own tunes).
eta. "Beatles" tribute bands come to mind; however impersonator is probably a better description. Much like how some well know acts offer comedic relief by interjecting an Elvis voice or Johnny Cash. And a little goes a long way.

I've been to enough concerts and festivals to know that's not true

quote:Agree completely. I just listened to their album for the first time and was really impressed. Of course it sounds like LZ and maybe more current bands see their quick rise to fame and try to sound like that too! I would love to see a resurgence in great rock and roll.

I feel like I've been living under a rock with this one and should probably pay a little more attention to at least a few awards at the grammys :)
New to this board but really like it and have enjoyed some of the recommendations from this community. Probably won't miss out on a sound like this if I stay somewhat active here.
