Senator Cornyn reverses course on base name changes

WASHINGTON — After initially resisting the idea of changing Fort Hood's name, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn indicated Friday afternoon that he is more open to changing the names of military bases named for Confederate leaders.
Fort Hood, a massive military installation in Central Texas, is named after Confederate military leader John Bell Hood. "I was asked that question yesterday," Cornyn said, a nod to comments he made Thursday to reporters in which he pushed back against the notion of changing base names. "And since that time I've learned actually that the Senate Armed Services Committee has voted in a bipartisan vote to issue a study, a commission to come back with recommendations to Congress. I think that's the appropriate way to handle it.

Cornyn is up for reelection this fall, and the two candidates in July's Democratic runoff criticized his initial comments on Thursday.

That's fine. I'm not against removing Confederate names, I just know it doesnt actually address the problems these people are having. It's a scapegoat and quite a stupid one at that.

OMG, that would make everything better immediately

Isn’t it though? The stuff some people let bother them is comically tragic.

There’s gonna be more statue removals, name changes of streets, etc., and eventually bills passed under Trump than any president.
The man is doing work.

It would be interesting to see the reasons why these military bases were named after Confederate generals. Since that was in the hands of the Union Army and federal control, it makes me wonder why.
Was it a kind of peace offering to reduce lingering resistance?

He needs to change his name too. John Cornyn, John Bell Hood? Racist sumbitch.

This is easy if Cornyn drops a set. Obama rejected those same idea. His excuse? The bases were named as an act of reconciliation and unity between the north and south.

This overreaction of feelings is ridiculous, but the worst is yet to come when they start to rename these places.

What's sad is the outspoken black political leaders can be pacified with something so meaningless while their white handlers in the democratic party keep them poor and subjugated in the Democrat controlled police states.

Browsing around on the topic, the bases were named at the outset of WWI and WWII. America got into WWI only 52 years after the end of the Civil War. I doubt that too many southern boys would have volunteered to go to Fort Sherman or Fort Grant.

Kind of weird they were named after confederate generals to begin with, unless those guys had some sort of sustained excellence when they were still in the USA.

The lazy and stupid will figure out that the unintended consequences of their agitating will do far more damage to themselves. They will still be too stupid to care though.
