If we redistributed all wealth in the U.S. today, how long before it comes back to now?

I'd give it about three generations.

There's a reason most poors are poor, and I doubt it's lack of opportunity.

Short term band-aid if aid were to be redistributed. Too many people would be left with too much money to blow without even considering the ideas of investing or saving

Before it ALL comes back? Never.

There are a lot of rich people that were born that way and likely don't have the ability to build up generational wealth themselves if starting from zero.

But yes, a lot of super smart folks would get their money back quickly.

ETA:

I am not saying I want to redistribute wealth for the record. I think if someone's grand pappy earned generational wealth and wanted to make his lineage rich with his money, that's what should happen. Inheritance death tax is an absolute sham.

The Dave Chappell reparations skit summed it up nicely.

Sorry, a large portion of the country demands it of you.

yeah i think a better way to phrase it is how long before the population in the lower class (or their progeny) ends up in the lower class again

1-2 generations for sure

this belief that there isn't individual causes for economic standing is insane. yes, there are issues larger than the individual that hurt the prospect of leaving the lower class (you can call it structural, institutional, systemic, or whatever) but you can't change their fortunes by eliminating these structures.

if you grow up in a family with a lower class mindset in a geographic area where the lower class mindset flourishes, then you're very likely to adopt the same mindset. once you do that, your chances of leaving the lower class fall. and there are some behaviors that effectively seal your fate

now what structural change can do is eliminate or soften that very last portion, but it can't eliminate the priming and biases involved in the LCM that will lead to sub-optimal decision making

if you just give these people money, they have no support structure or culture around them to know what to do with the money. the vast majority of cases will end up right back where they are. that's why dumping money isn't a solution. we have to eradicate the mindset/culture (which will take some structural changes and meta decisions well above the individual)

and, for any leftist reading this, when i make these comments, my head is filled with trailer parks and backwater rural meth havens full of white people.

That is why we need to make some fixes to the system for the health of the nation - think of it like debugging. We need to find a way so that money keeps flowing up through the economy by making sure everyone has a accessible path forward and some skin in the game.

Widespread, sweeping changes - from gov't structure, educational goals and costs, healthcare (which shouldn't be tied to employment in today's world), criminal justice, economic policy, etc.

The government would take over distribution and 80% of the monies would be taken by those in charge of giving it out. The politically connected and politicians would be the new super wealthy.

FYI 72% is the current cut on federal social programs.

A sudden influx of redistributed money will allow me to achieve my dream of manufacturing little robots that live under your house to fight snakes and other invasive rodents.

I would practically be reserving my family's space in the 1% 10 years from now.

criminal justice reform is a big step

you'd think that all the Republicans and Trumpkins who spent the past 2-3 years bitching about the bullshite criminal investigations of Trump and his associates, they'd be more welcome to CJ reform. many are still legit bootlickers who have been super pro LEO the past month

the CJ system as well as the structures in place once a person has served his/her time (bullshite or not) need major reform to open up the system to those citizens on the lower class who got swept up in the every-hungry greed and power tripping of governments (of all levels)

that's an easy start that should have 75-85% public support (in a sane world)
